Fuel Shutoff valve replacement on 2000 GS

I think I need to replace the primary fuel shutoff valve on my 2000 GS.  It's the valve on the bottom of the tank.  I've got a leak where the hoses connect to the valve and I can't determine whether it's the hoses or the valve but it appears to be coming from above the hoses.  It stops when the valve is closed.  I read where the nipples can come unseated from the valve while removing the hoses and this may be the problem.

Is there an improved valve from a 2001 or newer model that I should get to replace this one?  It seems ridiculous the way the shutoff screw is so hard to reach on this thing and I have to balance the tank in a weird postition to get to that screw.  It's always on verge of falling off the left side while I'm shutting off the valve and it's really hairy when the tank is full.  The tank's water drain nipple is right in the way.  I can't imagine what I would do if one of the hoses sprang a big leak.  It takes me several minutes to remove the plastics and loosen the tank enough to access the valve.  By that time, I'd be standing in a puddle of gasoline.

Does somebody make one with a lever that you can shutoff with the tank in place?

Thanks,

BH

Buy that one. File down a small ridge on the back of it, bolt it onto the stock location with the stock bolt, run new fuel hoses and enjoy.

This sounds promising.  Can you reach the lever to shutoff the fuel without loosening the tank?

I don't believe the Pingle solution allows for reserve fuel which would be OK but I'm not thrilled about dremmeling out the tank either.

If you are talking about the tank mounted one the Honda part will not work...

If you are talking about #9 in this pic

That's the one!  It also serves as the fuel filter.  Funny how they drew the unit backwards in that pic.  The set screw is on the left side and the nipples are reversed.  I've checked to see if the valve could be installed backwards that way but it would be impossible to get to it with a screwdriver.

I found it here with the o-ring for $65.  My Suzuki dealer quoted $85.

In the mean time, I've found the tear in the main hose and was able to snip off about a half inch and make it work.  No leaks yet.  I need to replace both of those hoses with something more durable anyway.   They get a lot of wear and tear whenever I remove the tank which I'm finding happens more often than I expected.  Tonight I noticed a bunch of rust coloring on the inside of my tank.  There's something else for the list of to-do's this winter.

Hey.  That does have a reserve fuel setting and it looks like you can reach it with the tank in place.  Thanks for the link!

Welcome again, I saw that too.. it makes sense that there are two pickups and one outlet.  and it looks purty to boot.  I think i'll be this mod in few months when it's really snowed in around here.
