The motor will run with a cup of fuel running into the carb feed line but floods out with the tank hooked up. Any clues?

Well I suppose I'll pull the carbs and remove the bottom cover. What should I be looking for?

Well.. First thing would be dirt. You should buy a can of carb cleaner and spray out the bowls. Remove the jets and clean them as well. The floats will have tabs that need to be bent to "set" the height. if they are too far off they will stay "open" and cause flooding. Also dirt can cause them to stick open and flood.

The O ring in the seat could be bad as well. once you check the carb rebuild how-to you will have a better understanding what you need to do  :thumb:

well, in reality I have a 2000 gs frame with a 2006 ninja 500 motor. I can and have done everything else on a bike but I've never worked with small displacement carbs before.  I decided to use the ninja carbs but I'm haveing the problem above.

Turns out it was just a clogged petcock vacume line. Runs like a top now.

soon, soon, my children. the long awaited arrival of the GS-EX will tingle your taste buds, shock the senses and some other stuff. I just finished it . Rode it last night and the carbs are still off. I think I need a stage three re-jet but am lacking in the fundage. I'll try to post pics tonight but I'll warn you I haven't cleaned it up yet. It may be a little rough.

What year is your bike.

The 2001+ carbs have a new float design that really isn't adjustable.
Can you explain, or supply a link?  I have a 2001 GS, and eventually I need to get around to doing a carb balance.
