something sticking with carbs

So, as posted earlier, I pulled a 10mph lowside my first time out with my newly-acquired GS. Realigned the front forks, which I guess had been under some stress anyways because the handling seems improved, but now have another issues:

My idle gets stuck at approx. 3k RPMs. It only happens intermittently. I'll notice it if I shift into neutral. Sometimes after a few seconds, it'll drop down to 1200, but sometimes it sticks. To get the idle to drop I have to put the bike in gear and let the clutch out. As soon as it hits friction, it drops back to 12.

I also noticed some strange plateaus when I accelerate, like openning the throttle more has little effect on the bike, but I don't know if it's just a low-powered engine or what. I think it's related to the above.

I'm not mechanically inept, but I've never owned something with a carb before. It sounds like something is jamming, but I don't have a clue where to look. If it was a float problem, I think my bike would be pissing gas. Any ideas where to start?

Thanks a bunch for the help!

This sounds similar to problems i had with my bike. It sounds like either poor firing on the cylinders (check for spark and strength) but it could also be having problems sucking the fuel through which is why opening the thottle more if anything kills the bike rather than opens it up.

I'll check those, thanks! Since the riding season is almost over here in north NJ, I think I'll do the petcock mod when it gets too cold to ride, and see if that helps.

Have you tried adjusting the idle screw? I had a similar problem that was correcting by adjusting the idle (when the bike is warmed up). If that doesn't help, search the board for "high idle"; it's a common problem with the GS

good luck!
