i just ordered the haynes manual for the bike, and the bike ive got doesnt have the tool kit.

what tools or toolset would yall recommend for performing normal n00b maintenance?

i plan on changing the brake fluid and changing out the brake pads, MAYBE rejetting, but modding now, and probably nothing substantial if i ever do.

Personally, I reckon you can't go wrong with a good socket set.
Formerly:
'05 GS500F
fairingless, twin dominator headlights, MC case-guards, alu pegs, alu bar-ends, Yoshi TRS + K&N RU-2970 (22.5/65/147.5), twin Stebel HF80/2 horns, fenderectomy, Oxford HotGrips

Currently:
Honda CBF1000

CndnMax

The only thing i've used to tool kit for was to get a spare tire out from under a truck
get yourself some hex keys, open wrenches, adjustable wrench, and a good socket set- all metric of course.

2 x open ended/ring spanner sets. Socket set, spark plug socket!, Screwdriver (get one with removable heads), allen keys.
Custom Kawasaki ZXR 400

If the mood takes you, you may want to fiddle with the rear suspension setup. If so you will need a C-spanner, (I think the radius is 32.5) one is provided in the OEM kit.
Good selection of bike orientated tool kits here, must be something similar over t`pond.

I'll recommend purchasing impact screw driver set , along the tools mentioned by others.

It'll save you a lot of trouble in case of stubborn screws ( and on GS there are many of those  :icon_razz: )

The tool kits that come with bikes are generally low quality crap. Good for minimal to emergency use. Harbor Frieght sells better tools.
Tools for normal maintenance need to be of better quality. Besides the stock tool kit, I carry a Craftsman multi-tool on all of my street & dirt bikes.
Common sense in not very common.

3/8 metric socket set
metric wrenches
metric hex keys
screwdriver set
pliers
channel locks
electrical tape
15-75 ft. lb. torque wrench
18mm spark plug socket
tire pressure gauge

That should get you started.  Buy quality tools such as craftsman, channel lock brand, Irwin, etc.  If you take care of them you will pass them on to your children.   :thumb:
Every zero you add to the tolerance adds a zero to the price.

If the product "fails" will the product liability insurance pay for the "failure" until it turns 18?
