you could get one alot cheaper.

I know people who have walked out the door, taxes and everything for 4700 on a brand GS500.

what about financing? can i do that with a private party, maybe threw a bank or credit union?
best place to find a nice bike in my area? thanks for the reply!

TragicImage

you can either finance private party, bank, credit union, or even through your Suzuki Dealer (They'll use HSBC Lending Corp).

Best place to find a nice bike?  New Or Used?

New.... Dealerships.... negotiate and don't be afraid to walk out the door.

Used? I like Craigslist.com

well for a 500 i probably want to go through dealer, that way i can trade in easier for a 600, or should i look into 600cc bikes and save me headaches?

Prafeston

If it's a first bike just buy a cheap old one and pay straight up. I bought my '90 for $1500, and I've heard stories of running GSs for less than that. Where are you located, cause there are a few bikes for sale on this site.

P.S. You'll feel real stupid if you wreck that bike pulling out of the lot and then have to pay your loan off while you don't even have a bike to ride. Go old and used to you know how to handle a motorcycle.

600 for a first bike.... Its a road alot of people have gone, which is why I can out ride alot of people on 600's.

Your Learning Curve will be much more difficult if you start out on a 600 super sport.  Its not to say that it can't be done, or that people aren't successful at doing it.  It just makes learning harder, and more expensive.  You won't get as good of a grasp on alot of the finer points of riding.

NEVER EVER EVER EVER "Trade" a bike in at a dealership.  Sell it privately.  If the dealership is going to sell your trade in for 4k... they'll give you roughly 2k, in addition to however much more they're going to rape you on the price of the new bike you're buying.

Dealerships get the name "Stealerships" for a reason.

and for what its worth, I bought new, and didn't lay the bike over until I have 9k miles on the odometer.  I think responsible, reasonable people will make the right decision for them, and act accordingly.

Also, the first bike I rode with any regularity (before I bought my own) was a 750cc street bike with plenty of power, and I didn't destroy myself or the bike.

so your saying you can outride 600s based on skill or what? i reallly dont want to spend too much money and i want to get something that will last me awhile. the 500s are nicely priced and i hear have some good power but 600s are more powerful but more expensive. my buddy has a 07 cbr600, i want to be able to keep up with him on rides atleast, im not in it for the stunts and whatnot though.

TragicImage

at a tight track, against a less skilled rider, absolutely.

If you and your friend are equally skilled, its sad to say, but he will leave you behind.... however its not like he's blasting down the road at 100mph (if he is, find a new riding partner).  A GS will be fine if they keep the speed below 80 or so.

You'll lose to him in acceleration. always.  However, a GS is more stable than most modern sportbikes, and will be able to maintain high corner speeds with less skill, and you'll be able to get on the gas earlier, which makes up for some lack in acceleration.

ive sat on the gs500, i like how it fits me, now its just deciding to go through private party or dealer. and what year.

Look on CycleTrader.com too for your area for a private party sale. If you're a novice rider, take along a buddy who rides well and knows something about motos to test ride it and look it over, and maybe ride it home for you if you decide to do the deal.
I love my new to me 2001 with 7K miles, $2100. Lots cheaper than new, I wouldn't buy new! Look for someone who bought new, didn't ride a ton but took some care of the bike, and is moving on or up. An older, low mileage bike is a lot more economical way to go, if it's running decently. You'll probably find something nice and clean for half the price, you just won't have a warranty, but you don't take the depreciation either.
Out here they advertise at about $4700. brand new, before tax and license.
I think for 2001 the carbs were changed in the jetting? and took care of some of the issues of the older GSs, but the newer models can still have problems. Should someone correct me?

I think it's too expensive. They are tryin' rip you off. I paid 3800 for 04 in 2006 with 800 miles on the clock. Very clean bike. Dealership not privately. Find a cheaper one (go to this section:   http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?board=2.0  ) and spend the difference on godd riding gear.

I thought about starting with 2004 CBR600 F4i  and I am glad I didn't!!!  GS500 is excellent learner bike. You won't get in trouble too quickly and if you want to do some stuntin' just go down 2T on the front sprocket, take the fairings off, mount case guards and you will be able to do wheelies and stuff  :thumb:

I think the negative here is the price. I just bought an 05 gs for my first bike and i love it so far. I bought it with one mile, new from a cert. dealer with a warranty for $3200. The dealer had two at the time, drove from OH to MD to pick it up and it cost about $100 in gas.

if it's near you, that looks like a great deal. I bought a 2005 gs500f with 3100 miles in May 07 for $3400. looking at all these deals in this post I feel like I overpaid, but honestly such a good deal is really rare. If you have the dough go for one of these new ones. If I knew then what I know now I would've gotten an older cheaper GS and not worried about dropping it (newbs).

I'd say go for it. It's a good price for a new bike. Very good I should say.
Winter's comin' so it is easier to find a good deal!
I purchased mine in the middle of the summer. Worst time to buy a bike but I was in a hurry, I couldn't wait any longer since the day I first saw her...

If you feel like saving a few hundred dollars AND want the safety of knowing the previous history of the bike, I'm putting my yellow 2004 GS500F on the market for $3000.  It has 94XX miles on it, a FULL SERVICE RECORD, a fenderectomy, Electropod supplemental flashing LED brake lights, a Stebel Nautilus horn (loudest legal horn on the market 139dB).  Every modification is functionally important - as a starter bike, I quickly discovered that people simply don't see motorcycles.  The horn is fantastic for making people notice you immediately - especially important on the highway with semi trucks and in general city riding.  I always felt uneasy on I-95 so I installed the LED supplemental brakes - they work wonders, I've noticed that drivers tend to give me much more distance.  I'm located in Melbourne, Florida and you can contact me by cell (321) 806 8538 or mdavey@ufl.edu
