RE:  Pliers

I don't know about "outgrowing" them.  I use mine every day.  They're a tool to make the job easier.  That said, there's no set requirement that a wire job be completed with pliers.  The occasional rider/racer may find it easier to do the job by hand.

The main problem with pliers involves overtwisting the wire.  Many new mechanics get overzealous pulling the "twisty knob", usually in an effort to tighten the "noose" at the starting fastener.  AC43.13 specifies 6-8 twists per inch.  Overtwisting the wire will strain and weaken it, possibly resulting in later fatigue failure.
Every zero you add to the tolerance adds a zero to the price.

If the product "fails" will the product liability insurance pay for the "failure" until it turns 18?

lol!  I was thinking video.

There's some technique to it, which is hard to show in still photos.  Plus, I'm not very good at explaining things.

GeeP... Thanks for posting the wire twist spec info. I never knew of any specs on wiring, just when I pulled the knob too far.
Common sense in not very common.

No problem, glad it helped.  Download AC43.13 if you haven't already and have a look though it.  I think you'll find it helpful for buiding race bikes.   :thumb:

BTW,  A head's up:  Wicks Aircraft Suppy has safety wire pliers on sale this month for $13.  Have a look here:

ohgood

Thanks for all the useful information here. I've downloaded the pdf's and piecing them together as one glob just now.

Calipers falling off really sucks, I know. Search for the forum for "Rons Cycle Supply almost killed me" and you'll  see what I mean.

Too bad about you losing the money.

Have you realized the bright side of this yet ? It happened on the track, not in traffic, with a 18 wheeler turning in front of you.  :dunno_white:

Be careful :)
