trying figure what is up with my 98 gs. the bike runs good on a full tank. when it gets to a little less than half it starts to cut. i switch the valve  over to reserve and it still cuts out. switch over to pri and still it will cut out. but once i fill her back up, she will run fine with the valve in pri or on.  i think its the petcock in the tank. ive looked at it and it looks fine. do you guys think my best bet would be to go ahead and replace the valvwe on the frame and the petcock. i cant think of anything else it could be.

The tank may have water / crud in it.

The petcock may be partially clogged.

Both ?

Pull the tank, flush it out with clean gas, look for pitting etc.

Don't suspect your carbs, they'll likely just trying their best with the crappy fuel/petcock/water running through them. ;)

no i know it's not the carbs. i just went threw them and freshen them up. while i was in there i went ahead a rejetted them. everything looked good in there. i've had the problem even before i went through them. but ill do that ride till im empty then pull the tank and see what's up in there

It's much safer just to get a 5 gallon gas tank and drain yours than ride till empty. If you use a clear line to drain the tank, you can possibly see the crud or water that has been giving you problems. I'll bet you have both, and the petcock is partially clogged. Add a drain/overflow line (from the carbs) and you've got a poor running bike.

Good luck :)

YEa... None of it may be related to the tank or lines.. It could be a carb prob. or ?? But I think checking out the above mentioned items would be a good start... At least then you have eliminated some things  :thumb:
