tail pipe help

I have a '96 GS500e.  Previous owner drilled holes into rear of pipe (see photo).  Not crazy about how it makes my bike sound.  Can anyone help me out and tell me:
1.  how many of these holes are stock
2.  can they be sealed closed (JB Weld)

Welding its about your only option but thats probably a pain because you would probably half to open it up.

Buy a stock exhaust off of someone here is probably your best bet, it will cost you more for shipping than the actual exhuast.

zero holes in the outer ring....I think

You could JB in a dounut shaped plate, but that would be a PTA.

Seems to me like folks used to install regular hex-head bolts in the holes.

Ah - here are a couple of posts on it, both by smoker:

I drilled some holes in muffler (around the existing exhaust pipe) as per a "DIY muffler mod" I came across somewhere, but quickly JB welded some bolts in the holes as my bike sounded like a chainsaw...needless to say, I DON'T recommend the "DIY muffler mod".

VERY interesting! My silencer looks similar, but the holes are evenly spaced. I assumed it was stock configuration, but since that isn't the case, it may be the final piece of the puzzle. My GS has always had a difficult time warming up properly. While syncronizing the carbs and adjusting the valve shims certainly helped, the beast remains unhappy about starting--a 3 minute idle and 10 minutes of jerky riding on choke seems the norm. I will let you know how the repairs affect my startup times. Thanks!

Yup, I have the mod too, it was pointed out to me this morning on the forum!    It was done neatly enough that when we were inspecting the bike that we thought it had just lost a couple of the brass hex head screws, (though "hex heads.."   crossed our minds), we just noted there were two empty holes. We are used to dual sport mufflers with spark arrestors sticking out the end.
We were more concerned with the oversized rear tire, the bald front tire, the clunking front shocks, and the "stumble". Plus someone painted the calipers blue to match the bike, hmmm. We really liked the little headlight cowl/wind screen though.
It runs fine so far (cold blooded of course though like all of them), sounds fine, isn't particualrly loud with just that little bit unplugged. I'll have to test the tightness of the other screws now though.

Just an update on my pipe.....sealed the drill holes with JB weld.  Much quieter!  Weather tomorrow should be decent here in central OH....plan on taking her for a much needed ride!  Thanks for all the input.

Did reversing the muffler mod make any difference in the warm up time or low end hesitance?

Those holes do nothing ... not for noise, not for performance ... You need to drill through the center with a looooong 12 inch + and large drill ... 1/2-5/8 dia ...
