Really high idle?

I am at a loss. I just rerebuilt my carbs and replaced one of the carb bodies due to a few problems with the old one. My problem now is that when I start the bike up, it revs up to 5,500-7,000 rpms immediatly. I have tried adjusting my idle control screw both directions to no avail.

Any suggestions? I am worried about overheating the bike while working on it since it is running too high and standing still.

Thanks,
Jeff

I forgot to mention that I cleaned the carbs and both petcocks as well.

Assuming you've rebuilt the carbs correctly (there are a couple of tiny o-rings in the top that could cause this problem if you neglected to put them back), this should simply be a matter of adjusting the engine idle speed. When the bike is warm (I usually go for a ride and pull over to do this) adjust the large brass idle screw to get the correct idle speed.

which o-rings would those be? Do you know off hand or could you highlight on a diagram? Thanks!

Also double check your choke and ensure it is not stuck closed.  I had some issues at one time and though it was a combination of many items, the choke being stuck was one of them.

Good luck mate!

I replaced the o-ring last night (one was missing, thanks beRto) , and it made a HUGE improvement. Now it idles at about 4,000 or less. I believe that now it will be just adjusting the idle screw. So here's another dumb question: When adjusting the screw, which way is more RPMs which way is less? Clockwise vs Counter-clockwise from above the bike?

CCW will lower your RPM's at idle, don't worry about that o-ring thing, I think almost everyone on here has done something similar at least once :thumb:
