ok i searched around the forum a little and tried to find out if this is possible.  My petcock has crapped out on me.  Which is not what i need right now.  If i say screw it and run a line from the lower connection point on my tank directly to my carbs and just cap off the other drain point.  What negative effects will this have on me, if any.

I mean the petcock is just a fuel selector.  soo...if instead of having a reserve i would just have a permenant on..(at least this is my thought process)

The only potential problem you may face is dumping all the fuel from the tank on the ground via the air filter in case the floats get stuck in the carbs.  That is why, the stock petcock not only a fuels selector but also an automatic fuel shutoff when the engine stops running.

As a quick temp fix you can get a basic plastic "fuel safe" inline fuel shutoff @ Lowes or some other hardware for about $6 I used one on my GS for a little until I got another petcock  :thumb:

I agree that if your bike is operating as it should it shouldn't leak, but if your floats stick you will loose A LOT of fuel... Also a full tank can have enough gravity to push its way in and out of your carbs...

In short, get some kind of shutoff  :thumb:

Yeah ... here's a lawnmower item that I took a picture of at a home center several years ago.  Not sure how well it would work on the GS, but it may be worth a try.

Kerry, that pic is why I bought mine 2 years ago... I bought the same style  :thumb:

Like I said.. a good temp fix but I wouldn't rely on it

And, of course, another option is to convert the existing petcock to be a manual shut off valve.
That is the option I went with. That provides with "On", "Reserve" and "OFF" positions.
