This is the same shock I just installed.  The one I got (ebay) was advertised as a 96' Katana 600.  It looks the same.

If Srinath could give the OK on the year difference,  I would go for it.  Does the seller have good ratings?

looks like the one I bought. Why not go for a newer one though? I bought a 2001 kat shock. then promptly sent it JohNLA's way when I got a deal on a gsxr shock.

i bid on it because they seem to be pretty scarce.  I had one last week and someone outbid me because i was on vacation.
