Went to work this a.m., no problems.

First time taking the bike out on a trip more than 2 miles.  20 miles to my work.  It was a fun ride.  The weather was great.  Very nice indeed.

The weather was changing for the worst.  Not really.  Just very cloudy, and extremely light sprinkles.

I was hoping not to get rained on.  I didn't get it too bad.  Just light sprinkles, but enough to make visability bad.  Had to wipe my face shield twice.

I was behind a pickup truck, and in front of him was a big dirt truck.   Chucks of something was hitting me.  Small mud rocks.

I then noticed that the the bike was revving high and jerking ever so slightly.

I kept going, cause of the construction, there is no place to pull over.

Then I noticed that I had the throttle ALL THE WAY OPEN.  The bike wasn't going over 55MPH.

Then a little Pontiac sports car cuts me off by NOT yielding while coming onto the expressway off of the ramp.

The bike died.

Luckily there was a part of the expressway that was blocked off with the orange drums.  Only bikes fit between them.

The bike was sputtering to start.  Sometimes it would start then die right away.

I was able to get it home, but it took a lot longer than it should.

One block away from my house, the bike died, and wouldn't start.  I pushed it to my driveway.  Waited a little while, and it started right up.  Parked it in the back porch, and started snooping around the 'obvious' culprits.

I know I have to clean my carbs again.  My gas tank was rusty, and so I tried to clean it as best as I could, but it wasn't good enough.

I have replaced the in-line filter twice already, and it still on my first almost tank full.

I do have a small cake of rust inside this 3rd filter, so I guess I am having a carb cleaning weekend this Friday.

I had the same problem with my bike, it was because the tank was rusty and had been relined by the previous owner, eventually the tank started to peal and the bike would never run right even with a carb cleaning. so I bought a newer tank with no rust off a guy here on the forums. fixed the problem 100% right away.

yea it sounds like rust could be blocking your carbs.  At higher speeds it  sucks the gas out faster then it comes in.   when stopped it slowly fills back up again.. had this problem with mine.. cleaned out the tank and installed an inline fuel filter and the problem was fixed.  Of course i had to spend time cleaning my carbs.  OH joy what fun that was..... :bs:

My last motorcycle was improperly Kreemed and the rust the guy was trying to fix/hide was still there.  What I recommend doing for a rusted tank is will it with a little bit of water and aquarium pebbles (try to get the unpainted kind if possible).  Slosh the water/pebble mixture around for about 5 minutes and then dump it out through the filler hole.  Do this a few times and you should have a good amount of the rust removed.  Drain out all the water, especially the pebbles, and let the tank dry for a little while.

In terms of fuel filters, what I used on that bike was 2 in-line filters; one had a stone filter which trapped most of the big chunks of crap, the other was a paper filter which trapped the smaller particulates that got past the stone filter.

Hope this helps!

Sounds like quite the adventure!  :o

I hope you get everything sorted out soon.  :)

Thanks everybody for the kind words and ideas on how to fix the rust problem.

I will prolly do the pebbles thing this weekend along with the carb teardown and rebuild.

The tank will prolly get Kreemed.  Or the other stuff I can't remember right off the top of my head.

I remember when I did the carb cleaning for the second time, I did it right, because I could start the bike from dead cold start on the first second of the crank, and with NO CHOKE!  I hope I can get it like that again.

laterz guys.

I'd use POR-15... I've seen too many Kreem coatings come loose. I can hear Srinath already...

Wait for it....

how do you get por-15 to coat the entire inside of the tank?

You plug up the petcock openings , pour the por 15 sealer in- then plug up the fuel cap  ( You do the sealer after the cleaner and the etching are done....). You turn the tank..over and over slowly  in all directions...the sealer  will coat all the sides. When you're pretty sure the  whole thing is coated- open the plug in the petcock area and let he excess sealer drain out. The recommend 4 days for curing time.

It's not hard... just take your time and follow the directions.

That's the kit and it has downloadable instructions there if you want to read them.
