does anyone know how i can do a check on a bike with just the vins?

i need to kno 2 things
1 is the bike stolen or not
and
2.is there $ owed on the bike by p/o

i want to pay the guy for this 1990 gs500e  but i wont untill i know these two things
im suspicious bout it cus the bike has no key locks as they are al broke out and the current owner has no title and he left it my neighbors house for over a yr...plus he wants so little for the bike since it runs and all..... he said the guy he bought it from lost the keys and title and thats why he is selling it so cheap..........is there like a toolbox/ compartment i can look in to see if theres some old registration? i cant find any compartment on this bike.....

Or....................get the VIN and go down to your local police station, most don't charge for the service, those who do only charge a minimal amount.

or... look at the title.  money owed will show as a lien on the bike.  Don't do anything until you have the title in hand.

HE
DOESN'T
HAVE
THE
TITLE

seriously..........

yeah, compartment/toolbox.............pop the seat off, but you need the key for that.  You can always beat the lock cylinder out of the housing for the seat release, grab the cable and open it that way.

there's this thing here in New York we call... a duplicate TITLE!  And since ownership can't be transfered without a TITLE, the owner will need to get a new one!  As long as he is the owner, he should be able to go the the DMV and get one.  If he got it with no title, then the owner before him needs to get a new title to transfer it to him so that he can transfer it to you before he can register it.  You can sell it all day long but registering it will be impossible without a title.  Funny things, those titles.

Rob, you seem to be missing alot here.

The guy he is buying it from didnt have the titile either... It would be next to impossible to chase down or get another title for that bike. Unless you are buying it for parts I would leave it alone.  :thumb:

Ehhh, long as it's not stolen you could register it in a few states as a 'custom build'  insurance tends to suck on those though.   So, yeah, parts bike if it's not stolen.

Get the bike's VIN checked really good to be sure it isn't stolen.  If nothing comes up, take the bill of sale to an auto insurance company and get a title bond (means the insurance company insures that the bike isn't stolen).  With a title bond, you should be able to get a title.  You can do that in Mississippi anyway.  Then it's a matter of changing out the seat lock and ignition lock.

here in michigan anyone can file for lost title on a vehicle.... the original owner on the original title will be contacted to verify tat the bike was sold but its not cheap and insurance is more plus theres a high chance they cant contact the original owner and they will confiscate bike   usually when that and or if the bike comes up stolen happens. and i will get in trouble for purchasing stolen murchandise

well i can either get a "builders title" or i can go to the salvage yard and get a frame with a title and pop the vin plate and have a salvage title  :dunno_white:   but i dont think geting a frame would be cheap......

actually if it were me and the price was crazy low (like $100 for a running bike) I'd say to hell with the possibilities, buy the bike, strip it downa nd swap onto a good and clear frame (less than $100), chop the old frame up and chuck it in the garbage.  titled frames for little bikes like these are all over the place for good prices.

wel the guy wants only $250 for the bike and ive got it running pretty good.... tank has major rot tho so i will be needning a tank
it has brand new brakes new tires new v&h exhaust put on by current owner....besides the vin......does the frame have any other serial numberS?  if not ill buy a frame just for the vin plate as swapping vin plates is alot ezier than swapping everything else

swapping the VIN plate is illegal and hard to do in a manner that is not readily evident.  It screams 'stolen'
At $250 I would probably buy it and swap everything over.  You can probably get a frame and tank for $200.  So, yeah, less than $500 and a saturday to do everything and you've got yourself a damn nice little bike.

yeah, pretty sure it's just 2 rivets.  grinding em off will leave scratching on the plate that cops (at least here) are trained to look for.

For $250... BUY IT!

The VH will sell for $150 easy  :thumb:

And the VIN is stamped in the frame now.  :thumb: No more plate swapping crap... however, we "re-vin" bikes at work with a kit from Suzuki that looks like a basic punch set to me  :thumb:

thats why u use a small drill bit and drill out the center of the rivet pull the vin ...place new vin in place and re poprivet the vin with slightly larger rivets
