California Smog Laws

There seems to be some confusion as to what the motorcycle smog laws are for California. I certainly am.  :dunno_white:

Here is what the DMV says:
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/smogfaq.htm

I was down at the motorcycle shop talking about the smog equipment that I just removed. One person said that all 2006 and earlier bikes will stay exempt but that next year all 2007 and newer bikes will no longer be exempt. But who knows? I heard or read somewhere that in the 70's they started to smog cars and all the people that had removed emissions equipment had to put it all back on.

I guess the moral of the story is: If you decide to pull all your emissions equipment like I did, don't throw it away!

Anybody have any more info to throw in the mix on this one?

Do you mean they'll start smog checking 2007 and newer bikes from now on?

I can't imagine how they would do that though. Current smog check places don't have the equipment to check bikes, and I don't think the amount of pollution that bikes contribute (~2% of vehicle registrations in the state, and a fraction of a percent of the total miles) is worth the resources that they would need.

If they do anything, it would probably just be like the vehicle "inspections" that they do in most other states: shops do a quick visual inspection of the vehicle to make sure that no hoses are leaking, it doesn't spew smoke, etc.

motorcycles are still exempt in CA from smog no matter what the year of production is. This guy you spoke to has no idea what he is talking about because motorcycles are still considered LEV (low emission vehicle) modes of transportation.
