Why motorcycle boots are a good thing!

I just found it ironic how we were just discussed this very topic here. Well, today I was in a hurry and didn't put my boots that go above my ankle on. Well, now I am paying for it!

I was taking the bike out for errands the gas station was about five miles away. Since, I had been in the hospital I wasn't sure how much was in the tank thought it would be enough to make it. I was wrong was just accross the street from the gas station. (A gas gauge would be great on the 500) Ok I will push it in no big deal. Well, when I was getting off I guess I missteped and lost my balance. Well, so did the bike and we both went over and somehow my right ankle ended up under the bike. Not broken but severely sprained and bruised. At least a Good Samaratin (fellow biker) picked up my bike parked it in a safe place and got me some gas   Riding the five miles back to the house was one of the worst things I've done in a while.

So, I am going to be getting a great pair of boots. I've now more than paid for them with today's ER trip! Two lessons learned the extra five minutes to put on the gear is worth it and never again will run out of gas! Oh, the bike was fine not a scratch! If I had broken the new Led turn signals I think I would have lost my mind!

That is a race I don't want to compete in. How's your son doing? By the way when is that ride again? Hopefully I will be healed up by then. I have an appointment with my Ortho on the 26th to get an idea exactly what I did do to my ankle.

Yeah, I can't believe how stupid I was. Next time kickstand comes down first then I will push. Or I will just walk to the gas station! Guess it will be a lot longer 'till I get the center stand down lol!

As is life!

Wow, I hate it when that happens!

I think more that you would have been really upset if you'd broken your ankle and had to have it pinned, because lights and bikes can always be replaced.

I laid my Hawk down at a gas station pump 30 years ago in the middle of summer, a 100+ degree day- I filled it up and it wouldn't start (was probably vapor locked). I kicked it until I was dizzy, and then just overbalanced it a few hairs the wrong way (one problem with only being able to toe a bike is if you get dizzy or really tired) and couldn't catch it, but controlled the drop. Then I was still weak from heat and gas fumes, and had to ask the young pump jockey to help me pick it up. Then I had to push it over to a parking spot and sit in the shade for 15 minutes to let it cool off, then kick started it and rode home. Humiliating, yep.

I used to always move heavier street motos with the side stand down too just in case, but I can't do that now, my GS is too low.       Dirt bikes were always easier to move with control and finesse, and you can lean your hip against them too for more support and control.

I already chastised you on the boot thread,       so I will just say I'm sure glad that you didn't do more damage to yourself than you did, and I hope you didn't do more than your think you did. Be careful with the ankle after it heals, once severely sprained, it can do it again more easily. I've sprained my right ankle 3-4 times.

Ow!

I bet your pride hurts more though.  Being pinned under your motorcycle is *ahem* an "interesting" experience.   In my case, I parked in a gravel parking lot with the rear on top of a big rock about two weeks into riding.  Over I went right in front of the noon lunch crowd at the small-town diner.  Still living it down!

I like my Sidi boots.  They're amazingly comfortable and all-day wearable.  They also add quite a bit of control feel.   :thumb:

If the product "fails" will the product liability insurance pay for the "failure" until it turns 18?

Thanks all! Yes, my pride is really battered right now. I went to Church on Sunday every 15 seconds "what happened? Was it on the motorcycle" I just wanted to run up to the pulpit and say yes it was on my bike. Yes, I was standing still. Yes, it hurts, Yes I will keep riding!

Everybody keep me in your thoughts tomorrow. I see the ortho and hoping I didn't do a whole lot of damage to my ankle. I have a lot of bruising and pain in my arch anybody have a similar injury? I also have severe swelling and bruising on the lateral ankle side.

Thanks,

Well, I saw the ortho today and he had something interesting to say when I commented to him about it being the one time I wasn't wearing my boots. He said that by judging by the injury and how I did it that if I did have the proper boots on that it probably would have blown my knee instead. He said that something would have to give in my particular case and that since my knee had already been operated on twice that I was lucky it was my ankle.

As the ankle goes nothing is broken but he said that he thinks I may have ruptured a tendon on the inside arch area and may have torn a ligament on the outside by the ankle. Unfortunately, I cannot have an MRI so we will have to do conservative therapy. Which means no work for the rest of the week and sit down work for the next four to six weeks. I'm guessing I will be off the bike even longer which really sucks the weather is amazing here!

I'm sick of my luck! I just wanna ride without any catastrophe's

Thanks for the update! I'm sure glad it wasn't the knee then, especially since you have already had surgery there, it's even worse to mess that up than the ankle. But it's still too bad. So maybe the moto gods were actually looking out for you????

I hope it heals well!

I'd think that you might be able to ride sooner, but you will know if you are up to it, so you have to trust that instinct. You wouldn't want that ankle to have to take a lot of the weight of the bike when stopped or parking.

Take care, the weather is nice now but will be iffy again all over the country before long, so don't worry too much about it.

Being that it is my right foot all I have to worry about is braking and the occasional balance at a red light. I'm one of those that usually sit at the red light in Neutral ( Bad girl I know). At least nothing is broken but this big 'ol walking cast thingy is annoying as all get out.

at least with the weather it is almost always like this in Florida! Guess it is time to give my little convertible some TLC. Oil change, fuel filter, I also have a kick A$$ AMP, base module and some new speakers that need to go in. When I got my "flick" (name of my bike) I just abandoned my car.  But, now I can also work on the bike too. I gotta get the right fairing re- painted so maybe this is all a good thing. Well, just trying to be positive about it all!
