So, i was just replacing my clutch and brake levers with a couple fancy lookin carbon ones to match my mirrors and turn signals, all was well until i broke what i think is the clutch safety switch.. little plastic pin that fits into the bottom of the lever.. what to do?  Bypass this thing. :) ;) :o 8) :cookoo: :dunno_white: :flipoff: :icon_confused: :icon_lol: :icon_mrgreen: :icon_razz: :icon_rolleyes: :icon_twisted:  :kiss3:   :nono: :bs:  :2guns: O0 :thumb:

As long as you're not dumb enough to try to start the bike in gear, open the headlight shell and find the connectors that run out to the clutch safety switch. Disconnect them from the switch, then connect them together. Problem solved...

If you ever sell the GS, WARN THE NEW OWNER that you've jumped out the switch, or better yet, buy a replacement switch from someone building a track bike, and install it. The new owner probably won't be an experienced rider, so the safety switch could help to prevent problems while they're still learning. Of course, jumping out the switch means the wiring diagram (schematic) becomes technically incorrect, which is another reason why you should install a replacement. Kurlon is building a racer, and might be willing to sell you his switch at a discount:

Can't hurt to ask...

Mine went on me one day.

I went to start it and it just didn't work.

Thankfully (and unusually) this was the first thing I check and noticed one of the contacts had broken.

So I bye passed it with a paper clip. All is well, I just just made a habit of starting my bike in Neutral with the clutch in.

Good advice to remember about telling other riders about it.  :thumb:

or you can jon the wires directly behind the switch location

super anti-theft bypass method:

just putting an alligator jumper on it means you can pull off the alligator and know the only way someone can steal it is with a truck/van.

then eventually pull the headlight and bypass the switch all together. i just got sick of the clutch interlock myself. the sidestand (if working) should be enough if the bike is in gear.

I think the side stand switch is an excellent idea, the clutch one i couldnt care much about, its just annoying especially if you get a dodgy switch that doesn't always work.

I had to pull over a motorcycle the other day in my car just in time to tell him before he made the right hand turn he was indicating for that his side stand was down - i saw in my mirror  :o That could have been nasty.....

I also hate - especially noted on aprillias that annoying sprung side stand - so when you stand the bike off the side stand the side stand springs back up at a phenomincal pace. Thats just dangerous - so easy to move the bike a few feet forward and go to lay it down on the side stand only to find its flicked away the minute you took the weight off it. Plus its a bugger to put the bike on the side stand because you put it down with your foot then go to lean the bike over but you have to keep your foot holding the side stand in place or it will spring back.

Nice looking GS; seems well maintained... looks like the PO had a bunch of keys on a key ring / fob, and scarred the hell out of your handlebars, which is a shame. You could probably get the rust off, and cover the damage, without too much effort...

I REALLY like your anti-theft method; you can bet I'm going to incorporate it SOON. Thanks for passing that along to the rest of us...
