If you don't change the filter or at least what is a good starting point...2, 2.5 quarts???

Haynes manual says,
2.6 litres (= ca. 2.75 liquid US quarts) for oil change only
2.9 litres (= ca. 3.06 liquid US quarts) for oil and filter change.

If uncertain, when refilling start pouring say 2.5 quarts then a little at a time, checking with dipstick. :thumb:

hope it helps. :thumb:

I put in 3 quarts every change whether I change the filter or not.  It's a bit overfull if filter is not changed and a bit under the full line if filter is changed.  It's worked that way for me more than 50 times already for over 130k miles on my two GS's with no problems.
407,400 miles in 30 years for 13,580 miles/year average.  Started riding 7/21/84 and hung up helmet 8/31/14.

I just do 3 quarts as well when I change the filter. Its usually just a tick over the mark but, the damn thing burns enough oil that its fine.

I can never tell how much oil is in there after an oil change. The damn thing looks clear and doeant show on the stick so I just put 3 qts.

Have you tried looking at the edge of the dip stick instead of the flat side?Try it.Looks like a bubble of oil.

I just got 3 liters of Castrol Actevo 10w-40 and a new filter.  I believe I have an oil change in my near future.  So do you guys (and gals) think I should dump the whole 3 liters in or should I try to stick to the 2.9?

3 liters is to much.If I remember correctly,3 quarts is like 1.25 liters.

Look at the 2nd post in this thread.  2.9 liters for oil and filter change per Haynes Manual.  1 liter = 1.05 quarts
