no center stand: how to get weight off rear? (new suspension)

Well all new progressive springs and a kat rear shock will be coming in the end of this week and i have no center stand!   :o

To change out the rear shock there needs to be no weight on the rear wheel. So then, what are my options for getting the bike up?

Also, when replacing the front springs, what kind of consequences come with not changing the fork oil (I know a few of you have done this) and then what would be the cheapest/easiest tool to change the oil with.

thank YOU

Concret blocks, some 2x4 scraps and a strong friend or 2.  :thumb:

will it balance like that with the exhaust on? or will it damage the exhaust?
maybe this is a good excuse to take it off and repaint it.

The consequence of the "lazy method" is that you will have crud remaining in the front forks. If you remove the fork, you can rinse it out with some fork fluid and make sure that no gunk gets left behind; for the extra half-hour of work, I think it's worth it!  :thumb:

If you still opt for the quick-and-dirty method, Pantablo's website gives a HOW TO:

The 2x4's should mis the exhaust and hit the frame. If you're doing the springs use pablo's method in the link above. That way you don't have to strip the front end.

If you have some extra $ lying around you could just do it the "proper" way and buy a rearstand: http://www.kneedraggers.com/list/5.3000

Can't use a rear stand when changing shocks.

Plastics off and an engine crane lifting the crossbrace of the subframe.

Just take a scissor jack like what is in you car  and a 2x4 and jack it up enough under the engine so that it holds it still. Then get your wife  girlfriend of buddy with the beer to hold it steady while you remove what you have to. this way you don't accidently knock it over you can try this. cause if your replaceing your shock you cant put anything under that swing arm cause once you pull that shock out it will collapse then your screwed.  just stabilize it under the back part of your engine and you should be fine.

well i certainly dont have an engine crane around.

... I am having a hard time understanding how and where to put a 2x4 to lift the bike  is the 2x4 perpendicular or parallel to the frame? what part of the engine/frame does it touch? any pictures?

thank you everybody

I don't have pics.I put the concret block running side to side and then stacked scrap 2x4's under it parallel to the frame rails. On my 89 the 2x4's just missed the exhaust and the frame rested on the 2x4's.I used deck screws to hold the 2x4's together.I'll see if I have the stuff and take a pic tomorrow.

If you have an open ceiling garage you could always throw a ratchet strap over a rafter and use that to lift the ass end, just be sure to have the front end firmly secured in some manner

alright i thing i will be able to rig something.
the full yoshi exhaust makes it a little more difficult though.

I'll fill you guys in about all the upgrades when i am done

I completely forgot to take into account your full Yosi system. It may not be possible to use my method of holding up your bike.I had stock exhaust on mine when I did it.I know there were a couple things different on the 89,the exhaust may have been slightly different.

My dream garage will have 10 ft. ceiling with a glu-lam beam, and an electric hoist of 1,000 capacity.  End of any lifting problems.  Including engine lifts.   :icon_razz:
An engine hoist (cherry picker) is a close second.  The GS weighs less than 400?

Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.
I live in theory- everything works there!
