a few days ago i decided to try out a new stunt on the gs.   a "christ" as it is called.   well i forgot to set the idle to something like 4 to 5 grand.  so umm.... well i got both feet on the tank and forgot that i had my hand on the throttle and let go and OMG almost over the bars! but nothing happened i was quick to dismount from the tank but my right heel landed on my rear brake.  close one but everyting is cool.  just a learning experience, and what a rush

before you call me wreckless..

just remember the gs is a stunter at heart :bs:

find some way to lock your throttle. i've heard of people using big-ass o-rings that they roll unto the barend weight, and when they want to lock the throttle they roll it onto the crack between the grip and the weight, then just roll it off when they're done. just please make sure you're not doing this in the street. not that i condon stunting...

A good medical plan, or life insurance if you have a family, would probably help too.

why the need to get down on a guy for stunting?  as long as he doesn't do it on the street, and he doesn't do it recklessly, who cares?  it's just any other activity, that while dangerous, doesn't effect you at all.  do you yell at people who sky dive, bungee jump, free climb, or even ski?  just because you use a motorcycle to commute, or for "spirited riding" doesn't mean that that is all it should and could be used for.  let the man persue his passions and get off his back.  just because he enjoys stunting doesn't mean he is a squid or has a death wish, he just gets his adreniline kick and rush in a different way then you.

Any kind of riding is good riding...in the right context.  :)

If it was done under somewhat controlled circumstances, and not on mainstreet, more power to him I say. If it WAS on mainstreet (so to speak), then the term squid certainly would be a fair one.

I'd love to learn how to do all that stuff, but I don't have a bike to trash, and my self-preservation instincts are getting too strong....damn aging!  :P

Riding around the city is probably inherently more dangerous than practicing "stunts" in a controlled environment....at least I think it would be since it seems people try to kill me on a semi-daily basis.  :guns:  So, since we're doing what we're doing and not driving around in massive SUV's, it's a bit silly to condemn somebody for stunting cuz it's unsafe. Pot and kettle thing...you know..   :)

Glad you didn't crash Mat, good luck mastering that one, and stay safe.  :thumb:

the Rolling Burnouts are alittle rough as my front brake is alittle touchy, i was getting the Rolling Endos down pretty good, getting 15' on average, would be alot easyer with dual disc and thicker forks, wouldnt flex so much.  havent been able to practice in awhile as the GS has been my main transpo latly ,havnt been wanting to roast the tire, or beat on the forks. If i can get my yamaha rolling agian (crossing fingers) or get another GS frame and all the parts mounted, then maybe i can start playing again,  like mounting an nice 50 tooth rear sprocket from those 4th gear rollup wheelies, but then agian, having a 40mph top end would suck

so your afraid to push your limits.

whats the difference between me wanting to stand on my bike and you or anyone else wanting to enter that corner just a little bit faster.

either way its a risk.

thanks for the praise :nana:

some of you guys are just too small minded.  all you see that you can do on a motorcycle is commute from place to place or, race.  there is more out there and i am sorry you can't see it.

thanks for your support Jabba, Blueknyt, JohnNS, and Zarathustra

Check out this website for your video pleasure: http://www.sportbikehype.com/
I figure since they are a bunch of local boys in the DFW area I would give them props.

1. Click "Video Teaser" on the right hand side of to get an in depth look into trick riding.
2. You can also click "SBH Videos" on the left hand side for more streaming videos of trick riding.

I think its pretty cool, but some of the things they do are not in a safe environement (i.e. six bikers poppin wheelies on the highway at the same time!). In fact, I would not mind learning some of the more "sane" tricks like a rolling burnout or a stoppie.

As long as it is in a controlled environment or not around pedestrians I'm ok with it. Have some common sense though and wear a helmet and some leathers!

Just busting your stones dude. Just don't knock yourself off learning to have fun. To me, fun is riding. For you it might be riding closer to the edge than for me.

Be careful though!

I would second James with the 'Squid' comment, but I don't see the icon.

Mat,

Where have you been practicing these stunts?  Tell me it's on a closed course, with a walked and groomed road with plenty of run-off.  And personnel trained to help in case of emergency.

Sad to hear about your recent date with the Asphalt.

What's your technique?  I haven't been able to do a rolling endo.  I can *almost* do it stopped but I don't think I've got the process down...

I go like this:
bout' 15mph
get the weight forward so the front tire sticks
ease into the brakes until the springs compress
then pull up with my feet and give more brake.

It isn't really working for me....  I can do it on a bmx bike no problem but the motorcycle has me stumped.

You have to be a bit more forceful with the brake initially to get the bikes momentum to rotate the rear of the bike off the ground. Then you feather the front to keep it balanced.

My comment about "stunting" is because it doesn't require all that much skill, just alot of practice (and broken parts) and has very little practical application to RIDING a motorcycle very well.  Once you know how to do it yourself, watching someone pull stoppies and wheelies is kinda boring, unless you are just hanging around hoping to see them crash. ;)

If you want to use your GS to practice dumb-bike-tricks go fer it. Just don't expect those of us who know better to be your cheering section...

The problem with guys fulling around like that is the cost to my insurance.  Up here we have gov. controlled auto insurance and they just pool the motorcycles into one category.  So when someone wants to "test their limits" my insurance goes up. About 20% this year.  Now my GS500 is cheap to insure, but anything larger (cc wise) goes through the roof.

Sorry if I can't give the guy a "rah rah" for his attempt to test his mortality.
