Oh, Great Buddha, If you can spare a few minutes I need your guidance:

I'll make this as short as I can.  Bought 1994 GS 500E last year, 5,000 miles ago.  It had new OEM NGK plugs, K&N drop-in filter, and F1 muffler on stock pipes.  Bike ran good, but had flat spot at 5,000 rpm.  Checked plugs in the fall and electrodes were white from running too hot, but no visible wear, gap still in spec.  Decided to put V&H full system on bike and new (same) plugs at the same time.  Flat spot is gone.  Bike runs great.  You think the former owner left the stock jets in or didn't jet-up enough? (the latter is what I'm praying for)  Also, if I gleaned the info from the posts correctly here, my pilot and main jets for my current set-up should be 40 and 130?  If it still has the stock 122.5 mains do you think the plugs will still run too hot, or do you think that would be close enough?  Thanks for your time, and if my plugs tell me they're still running too hot I'll be ordering jets from you.
V&H pipes, K&N drop-in, seat by KnoPlace.com, 17/39 sprockets, matching grips, fenderectomy, short signals, new mirrors - 10 scariest words: "I'm here from the government and I'm here to help!"

OK K&N in airbox and pipe = 127.5 and 40.
You're is running fine possibly because your floats are wearing high.
In the short term it can work, but as you might have realised, it can cause fuel to get too high and over rich it and make it bad as well as send fuel into the airbox and make it lose power and gas mileage.
You with your 61mpg fuelly prolly are not doing that but I'd watch any change in that and start working on setting floats right and getting it jetted right.
Cool.

Hey buddah, do you still sell rejett kits? I have a stock bike with stock jets. I bought a k&N lunchbox before i found out i need exhaust also for it to run my bike to run good with it. Would it just be better for me to put the stock air box back on and use your jetkit rather than using the lunchbox and jetkit?

The Buddha

I sell them, they're $25 shipped. Inflation ... PM me.

Cool.

Hey Buddha

I searched on this problem already and found a ton of help but I wanted to just be clear with my problem and get your specific response.  My cousin bought a 1994 gs500 2 months ago with 1600 miles on it.  It has ran well since he bought it but it did have the hanging idle here and there but would go away for long periods of time.  He said it started to feel sluggish and maybe was hesitating.  I took it for a ride and it had some hesitation 0-1/8-1/4 of a throttle turn.  It didn't hang when I returned to my driveway and it idled great at 1200.  So I took the spark plugz out and they were slightly lean.  I took the tank off and checked the air filter....the air filter is brand new and the spark plugz are as well.  I put the tank back on and BAM! a hellacious hanging idle.  I mean it hangs at 3k-4k and sometimes never drops back down unless you do something to get it back down (idle screw, clutch etc.).  I checked the throttle cable and eliminated that as the cause.  SO I hooked up my aux. gas tank and mercury carb sync.  I synced the carbs and sprayed silicon spray all over the place to see if there was any air leaks.  There were no air leaks.  I backed out my fuel screws to 2.5 turns then backed out and in slowly from there going back and forth between carbs to no avail.  The bike is bone stock BTW.  I took the petcock off the tank and found the normal tiny little particles around the screen.  I took the vacuum petcock apart and found larger pieces of maybe surface rust/gas leftovers.  They were not very large pieces but enough to clog a pilot jet and idle circuit.  I have bowl gaskets and an in line fuel filter on the way.  I was going to clean the carbs, set my fuel screws at 3.75 out (got this from Birdman's post on the hanging idle thread), float level a little above 14.6mm,  bench sync, put back on, merc sync, and check for leaks again.  What do you think?  Thanks for the help.

John
no, no ,no  you need to give it more revs than just drop the clutch............ohhhhhhhhhh

The Buddha

You didn't need float gaskets unless they were leaking.

Stock bike works best with a +1 jetting, like they supplied to canada.

40 pilots. 125 mains, 1 washer under needle and 3 turns on mix screws. A pack of that with the button head allen stainless bolts, I sell for $25 shipped for a pair for both carbs ...  :thumb:
Anyway, you could get em from dealer/other too, you need mikuni non bleed 40 pilots, and large round, slotted mikuni mains.
Cool.

Thanks Buddha...that's what i thought from reading the floating idle posts.  Oh, I didn't buy float gaskets just the bowl to carb body gasket.  In my experience the gasket is no good after opening up the bowl  You have a PM
