In Florida lane splitting is illegal. Here in Orlando I wouldn't even dream of it. Even though I did see a couple of Escalades try it! If I get stuck on I-4 east and my exit is less than a mile away I'll use the shoulder but so do the SUV's found that out when I almost got smeared into a barrier at the John Young exit.

I'd talk to your friend and if he can't respect your sensible views then sianora (sp?). you have too many nice place to ride to let some one F them up.

That he can't seem to see red lights would have been enough for me. That he blew between you and a buddy to run a red light would be the last straw! Like you pointed out, if there hadn't been enough room he could have hit one of you, and that he blew through means he didn't keep any kind of safe following distance and was traveling at huge excessive speed and or not paying any attention to what was going on around him. Everyone I ride with SLOWS DOWN before an intersection whether the light is green or not, in case of people turning left in front of us.

I ride in the same areas, traffic out here in the beach cities is crazy enough without being so aggressively nuts!

I lane split on PCH IF traffic is stopped or crawling, because it can stack up really deep. But we are mostly going 5 mph in 1st and ready to stop immediately. Traffic usually is considerate, but we see other bikers going way too fast between cars.

I had a guy on a Duc pass me on the outside in the middle of a semi blind curve in the canyons Sunday, I didn't see him in my mirror because duh, I was looking through the curve. I caught him out of the corner of my eye as he came up to my heel, just when I was about to drift just a little left, good thing I didn't, but what the heck was he thinking??? Nothing other than I was too slow for him and he wanted by and there was room IF I had waved him around and expected him, but in the middle of a canyon curve is nuts, it's not a track.
I had guys on big Harley dressers crossing the yellow onto my side too, that's why I was riding closer to the right side white lane at the time.
