Let me know what you guys think on this one...I found it funny

Obviously, dealers always try to get you to pay the outrageous $80/hr for labor.  I went in to get a new chain and 14T sprocket, found decent prices, and simply asked them to cut the chain down to 110 links(stock) from 120.  They told me that sometimes the settings wont go back to stock, so I could end up needing a longer chain (right...not with a 14T...duh) and have to come back and buy another one.  Instead, they said I should just leave it with them, and they would do both sprockets and the chain, and make sure it was the right length.  Then, I find out that they charge 2 HOURS of labor for 2 sprockets and a chain!  Their final quote was $130 for the parts (DID O ring chain, 14T front and 39 rear)...total of $300 some with tax!  I thought that was nuts for 10 minutes for the front sprocket...10 for the clip-style master link chain...and the rear sprocket.  I know they have to pull the rear wheel...but that is nuts in my opinion.

Long story short: I'm doing this myself.  Question is, will my new chain wear significantly faster if I don't replace the rear sprocket?  It shows some signs of wear(it is 14 years old)...but by no means is terrible.  The bike only has 7500 miles on it (1994).  What do you think?

GSJack in over 100K miles on a 99 GS has not replaced the rear sproket.
So look at it and it looks OK, no crooked teeth etc ... ride away.
Cool.

Yeah those silly dealerships....and their crazy ideas of being a profitable business... Don't they know they are supposed to be here to just operate at cost and make us happy??

quote, as in, you did not allow them to service your bike, right ? GOOD !

ya, it's a little bit of work, but you can do it. why do you need a rear sprocket again ? i've heard they last the life of the bike, provided there is -ever- oil splashed on the chain ;)

dropping on a new chain and front sprocket shouldn't take more than an hour, provided you're thorough and meticulous. nothing wrong with doing a quick checkup of everything while you've got the bike down, oil change, brake pads, steering neck, all that good stuff.

oh wait, you only have 7500 miles. check the vavles and go play :D

indeed, also you ahd a quote  or a printout when you left teh bike. or were going to do it. and most shops will charge a minimum of an hour, so even if it were 10 minutes, its anhour
