just recently bought an 06 gs500f, after bringing it home from dealer I let the bike sit for 2 hours. went to take a ride, let the bike warm up for 5 minutes; and the bike still stalled on me. at one point while in 4th gear bike completely shut down. started back up, but same problem happened again. bike has only 50 miles on it. what could be wrong. appreciate any suggestions

if its that new take it back to the dealer, you should be able to make them fix it.

With any motorcycle 90 percent of the time the solution to stalling  is clean carbs drain gas replace spark plugs charge battery. 10 percent is when it become a PITA. Don't forget the inline filter. And don't leave choke on a long time. Fouls plugs. Start the bike twist throttle a few times and ride.

Check to see if your choke & throttle cables have the right amount of free play in them i.e. 2-3mm, as mine came from factory with the cables setup with no free play in it. Also double check those cables for rust and lubricate with WD40 or your cables may need to be replaced as they have been streched beyond use. I discovered that my bike did not have the right amount of free play in the cables as it was causing poor start-up and poor handling with slow speed manouvering.

As the previous person said you may need to have the carbs cleaned as mine had that problem because the left carb had debris in it from when it came from the factory. Possibly change your spark plugs for new ones in case they are faulty but check to make sure they are correct version for your bike as mine came from the factory with one of the spark plugs' for a different cc engine

It comes down to the fact the Suzuki manufacturing has poor quality control but the parts they make for it are good, you've just got to double check their quality of finish.

Is there gas in the tank? (this is a serious question, the GS500 may look like it has lots of gas, but in fact is running quite low. As a first point of business, fill up the tank).

Did it stall when you tried to ride, or while it was sitting and warming up?

A stall out in 4th gear may be a problem with fuel starvation. This is a well known issue with the stock petcock (although a 2006 seems too new for this to be a problem already).

I would bet that it sat on the showroom floor for the past 2 years w/ gas in it... Tell the dealer you want the tank drained and fresh gas put in  Problem solved

Soundes like a classic case of starvation.The frame mounted petcock is operated by vacuum.When it stalls try turning it to PRIme.If it runs ok after that,the vacuum diaphram is bad.There is a write up on converting the new style petcocks to eliminate the vacuum operation.I can't find the darn thing.

If you put it in PRI and it is just down to reserve it will run as well. My $ are on your out gas. Put it on RES and drive to the gas station.

Yes.That's why I said it has a new style petcock.I still can't find that thread to mod it.

bike could use some gas, but is not close to empty.  I plan on calling dealer for them to take a look at, but its only been a day. Someone mentioned adjusting the idle setting also.

Idle should be 1200 to 1500 rpm.If you're not used to the clutch, closer to 1500 rpm is better.

Check your battery connection.  A loose connection can cause the bike to stall.

No, that is for the older bikes like my 2.There is one for the new style petcocks.Hope it hasn't accidently gotten deleted during spring forum cleaning.

was the gas tank full?
