Rehabbing an Improperly Stored GS, How Bad Will It Be?

I have been given a 94' GS that has been sitting, in a garage with the fluids still in it for about five years.  I'd like to get it back into working order.  Obviously I'll drain and replace all fluids, spark plugs, tires, and battery.

Any chance the gas tank won't need to be replaced?

Will the carbs just need to be cleaned or will they need to be replaced?

How likely is it that the engine will have to be rebuilt?

Any other advice?  This isn't my first bike, or my first GS, but I haven't restored anything that has been sitting before, so any advice is appreciated.  Thanks!

Drain, Flush and Replace all fluids including the Brake Fluid.

Replace Air and Oil Filters

Replace Battery

Replace Sparkplugs

Clean and Inspect Chain and Sprockets, lube chain if useable if sprockets are toast then get the chain to when replacing, no sense in a mis matched set.

Check Tires for signs of dry rot and flat spots if it was stored on it's side stand with the tires on the ground.

Check Tank once drained for signs of rust inside, if the tank was full it may not have rusted out.

I'd pull the Carbs off and clean the jets and passagways, fuel turns to varnish when left to sit which gums up the Carb.s.

Cant think of much more.

lol... I've only had one bike that I didn't bring back to life. Fry is pretty much dead on, so there's nothing left for me to type

i just bought a 94 that sat for a while probly not 5 years but DEF pull the carbs and clean them good.  i would almost replace your fuel lines cause my carbs were cleaned then got junked up again and i had to do it again.

I can tell you its a pain to get the tank clean, but you shouldnt need to replace it. My first GS had sat for 10 years! with a full tank of gas  :o

After doing just about everything FRY mentioned, its in great shape now

I took my tank to the coin car wash and shoved the pressure wand down inside and sprayed, dumped, sprayed, dumped... I think I spent about $10 to get the clumps of crap out. There were massive deposits of soiidified fuel/varnish.. it was BAD! After all that I used a KREM kit to seal it all up
