should be ( if seller is truthful) a through carb cleaning, a tank flush, chain etc. should do it. far south of 500 in repairs. or was that your contemplated offer?

i dunno i plan on offering 500 lol and see where i can go from there and i'm hoping the repairs is minimal cuz my friend is in search of a good beginners bike and i recommend something like mine and long and behold there it is a 92 GS500E where mine is a 98 GS500E but they look almost the same minus color and damages lol

sitting for 2 years... not running... obviousely down on both sides at least once... 11,000 miles... and did the 92 come with a BLACK engine ? does the right side plastic look odd to you ?

if it did:

$500, then you'll spend $200 on tires, $50-60 on brakes/bleeding, $100 on chain-front cog, $20 oil change+ filter, $40 fixing the rusty tank, hours upon hours of fiddling with the carbs to clean them out and fix all the re jetting errors of the previous 8 owners (priceless!).

sure, but you need to know a non-running bike is like a $2 hooker, you know what you're getting, but you don't KNOW what you're GETTING.

All GS500's had a black motor until I think 98 or so

Under 500 in parts most likely. Labor is all you. Bet on it needing tank, tires, chain, carbs, tune, fliuds, filters, etc.

  that bike will need some tlc...don't count on the tank rust going away with just a flush. I used POR-15 with great results... and like ohgood said, don't assume the guy before you knew how to jet a carb correctly. If it was sitting for two years with gas in the carbs, there will be a ton of varnish in there. carbs will probalby require a complete tear down, overnight soak in carb cleaner and rebuild. I have at least that much experience to share. I would also add valve adjustment to wreckhog's list.

The real isssue is that you could buy it for 500, put in 500 in parts and 20+ hours of labor.....and IF the frame/forks are straight, and you don't have any unexpected problems, and the cosmetics are better than they look in the pic, you end up with a $1K bike....lol

I also have boats. The boat next to mine is a multiyear project and the owner pays to have it hauled, winterized, and tuned up every season. It does not go anywhere of course as it is not seaworthy. In the words of my friend, people throw away better boats than that........

I'm with the others.  I recently did a basket case, and have some numbers.

Carb fix - worst case jets and gaskets - $75
New chain & sprockets - $150 (yes, I splurge on a DID X-ring chain)
Tires - $200
Front brake pads - $40

That's $465 before dealing with the rusty tank.

KBB value is RETAIL VALUE (ie fantasy), no ways anyone would pay $1500 for a 1992 in perfect condition.

At 11K miles it needs a valve adjustment.  Low $$, but PITA.

Offer $200.

I agree with Chuck.
Only I'd say no more than $200, at most!
It's amazing how fast a seemingly "cheap" motorcycle gets very expensive to repair and make nice again.
If you want to spend $1000-$1500, get a nice one that needs little.
You'll be ahead in the end.
