hey everyone ,  I'm a newbie to the site as well as the GS500.   I recently bought a gs off a kid for $600 , its a 1989 with a couple of problems that seem minor.   it's not in bad condition some rust on the frame but mechanically, thats where the problem is.

The "kid" says it was running on one cylinder, my father in law says that its possible that these bikes idle on one cylinder?

also I  did a carb clean on it took it off took it apart following the carb rebuild guide on the gstwin site.  got put together back on the bike and now runs like its starving for fuel,  should have left it cause it ran better before the carb clean.

also have a leak on the front fork and a leak some where around the crankcase left side near the shifter, but not right out the shifter.  its more like maybe a gasket might be missing?????

the main thing i want to figure out at this point is the carb and the running on one cylinder.

  thanks everyone

The GS does not run on one cylinder on idle. It should never run on one.

Did you replace your plugs? If you are sure the carbs are cleaned well I would try plugs and check the electrics.. Coil, plugs, wires etc... Also how the tank look? you should install an inline fuel filter as well  :thumb:

We can go from there  :thumb:

OK WELL I HAVE SPARK FROM BOTH PLUGS, WE TRIED STARTING WITH ONE PLUG IN ON RIGHT SIDE AND IT FIRED UP THEN PULLED THAT PLUG PUT IN THE PLUG ON THE LEFT SIDE AND NO FIRE.  IF WE PUT SOME GAS IN THE CYLINDER AND FIRE IT UP YOU CAN HEAR THAT IT WORKS FOR  A FEW SECONDS THAN DIES CAUSE YOU CAN HEAR THE TONE FROM THE MUFFLER CHANGE.  THATS WHY I DID THE CARB CLEAN THOUGHT THAT MAYBE GAS IS NOT GETTING TO THE ON CYLINDER.   AS FAR AS CHECKING THE ELECTRICS WHAT DO YOU MEAN???? COIL, PLUGS AND WIRES????    ANY RECOMMENDATIONS  ON AN INLINE FILTER????   THANKS

Follow the spark plug wire up to the frame. There you will find an odd looking black cylinder, that is the coil and plug wire.Your valves need to be adjusted and the carbs need to be balanced in that order. The valves aren't opening enough to allow vacuum to suck gas thru the carb and into the engine.
PICS are GONE never TO return.
