Anyone Krinkle paint the GS cases?

 Hey guys, time to paint and re-assemble my project GS. Starting with the motor....

Anyone use the PJ1 krinkle paint? I am thinking cases in krinkle, sides and cylinder in OEM shiny black... Soo like in the pic, The cases krinkle black, chrome parts would be shiny black and cylinders shiny black w/ the edges sanded to the metal like the photo..



The frame wheels and swingarm in silver about like the OEM frame or maybee gunmetal grey?

Gun Metal grey for the frame etc is spot on! would look the nuts , not the biggest fan of teh crinkle  maybe flat black engine with gun metal grey parts , im thinking of doing my forks, frame, sa in gunmetal grey  :thumb:

some of the HD's have a really nice paint scheme on the engine, some of them look complete ass - your picture looks like the way to go.

Ahh.. you bring up a good point. I like the shiny bolts as well  :icon_mrgreen:

Now, I don't know exactly what the best way is to paint the engine. I don't want to take it all the way apart. its already out of the frame, but I really don't want to take any more off than maybe side and valve covers. I do plan on replacing most/all of the bolts with shiny new ones but... While painting, how do I protect the bolts so I can get them out yet still get a nice coat on the engine and not damage the paint removing painted over bolts? If I tape em there will no doubt be missed areas of paint near the bolt, if I paint over them I may damage the paint while removing them or.. not even be able to remove them  :o. Are there any bolts I should NOT remove? What is easy TO remove to get a better end result?

I know the best thing is to take it all apart, but whats the next best thing?  O0

Blue painters tape ? Gonna wanna bake the paint on really good before you remove the tape though, or it might crack, i guess. I've seen powder coating stuff work before, and they used little dots of tape over holes that mattered. Peeling off the dots didn't matter, just push a bolt through it after it's cured/baked.

Someone else has actually DONE it with a gs though, and they'll chime in any second ;)

I've just started to strip the edges of the cylinder heads and was thinking of repainting the rest of the engine until i saw a pic of a GS somewhere that had stripped and polished side casings, anyone know if this is possible with the standard gs cases or would i need to find some aftermarket ones?

Yea, its made for engines. Did you see the pic ???  :icon_mrgreen: Thats a 2008 Yamaha Vstar  engine :thumb:

its not made for exhausts its only 500F But its made for motors  :thumb:

I second the gunmetal gray, I recently painted the swing arm and forks on my '96 to match the frame. Looks ace, if I may say so myself.

I used the krinkle paint on a Kawi GPZ 550 I had, I yanked the motor out, removed the the carbs and manifold thingys, then covered the openings with duct tape. Oh BEFORE removing the motor I used STP spray foam engine cleaner(not as oily as the other engine cleaners) after taping off the motor I then sprayed it down with denatured alcohol, it breaks any remaining oils down and drys fast and clean, makes the paint stick real nice.
The crinkle paint needs to be sprayed in two seperate patterns in order for to crinkle up, read the directions, it is very important. The paint held up real well to the heat and the matte finish held up well for over 2 years, I sold the bike and it was still looking good.
The only downside was it held the dust and dirt more, all those little ridges and crinkles are the reason why I think.
It is a nice look though.
