Hey guys,

I just bought a 96' GS in non-running condition from  GStwin member "Gino Vega".  It appeared to have been left unattended for a couple of years. It's got a K&N Lunchbox, full Vance/Hines exhaust, ignition advancer.  Supposedly the bike ran like a champ.   Anyway, when I got it I noticed the oil was full of gas.  So I changed the oil and filter.  Next I pulled the carbs apart (lots of info and help from this forum as I've never done this b4) and cleaned them up. The float needle valves were stuck in the seats which I think explains why the gas was overflowing into the oil.  After putting it all back together, fresh 93octane gas, iit starts and runs only with CHOKE fully ON even if fully warm up.  Any slight throttle movement stalls the engine.  Turning the choke off stalls the engine too. Idles at about 1200 RPM.  Idle screw adjustment does practically nothing except stall the engine if screw to far either way.

From these pics the right side cylinder is running lean and the left side rich.

Took some temp readings after about 10 minutes at idle.
LEFT SIDE:   124 degrees fahrenheit
RIGHT SIDE: 214 degrees fahrenheit

Where do you guys think I should start?  I think maybe the float bowls are out of whack.

Buddha:  Maybe you can chime in.  I remember Gino say you were his mechanic :thumb:

The blacker the plug the richer the mixture.Left plug is fouled from a rich mixture. The right plug is rich but not totally fouled.Yes the float levels could be to high and the carbs could be out of balance.I would check and adjust the valves before balancing them.See this.

ohgood

choke circuit only working on the left cylinder ? (just my first thought)

oh wait, it's heavy on the rich ... this is puzzling to me, but that isn't hard to do.

did you make sure the jets were 40 idler, 150 main, and the float height was set right ? (one set of carbs i have actually has different jets and way different float heights/ needle shims to make up)

what do you intake boots look like ?

good luck !

Gino's bike was the first bike that taught me ... NGK plugs are junk. A lot of geniuses think they are doing a tune up and they change every thing (Gino did that before he dragged it to my house) and the bike craps out. Put champion 809's in it. BTW Gino's bike is also the most sensitive to this, in the few days I had it.

So first thing I did was replace the plugs with Champion 809's.  They were $1.49 at Autozone :thumb: Cool!  Unfortunately it didn't make a difference  so feeling a little unsure about the cleaning I did, I pulled the carbs back out and rechecked things.  Only thing I didn't clean b4 was the needle jet as I seemed stuck in the plastic slide guide.  Tapped lightly on the main jet to loosen it and got it out.  So the needle jet is clean and shiny now.  Needle jet o-rings look a bit tattered so will run back to Autozone for new ones (anything special about these I should know?)

New observations:
Pilot 37.5, Main 150, Jet Needle 1 washer.  I attempted to count the turns on the air mixture screws, counted 2 turns on one side and 5-6 turns on the other :o (sorry, now i don't remember which side is what )  So tomorrow I'll put it back together at 3 turns according to Wiki matrix here.  http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Upgrades/Rejetting  Removed intake boots and they looked good.

Also gonna check the floats using a clear tube method described here: http://gstwin.com/float_height_check.htm  Can I just remove the float bowls and bend the float tabs to adjust them?

Please confirm this is the mixture screw:

Does the needle jet just fit one way?

Thanks.

take them COMPLETELY apart. ie all rubber and plastic crap off. then go to autozone or advanced autopars or whatnot. and get a gallon can of the carb cleaner tehy have. open it, take the basket out, put needles jets etc in it, set that aside, now take EMPTY carb bodies, minus the aforementioned plastic and rubber stuff, and place that into can full of cleaner. place basket on top, soak for at least 12 hours, if not 24. then remove all, let dry, reassemble. should work like a champ at that point. and replace plugs again  :thumb:

yes, that blue pen indexed screw is the mixture. 2.5 turns out or 3, whatever makes it right @ idle. sometimes more, sometimes less :)

your needle... i have no idea what that cut off bit is... the non-tapered end of the needle usually just has a one (stock needle) undercut for the C-clip, whereas the dynojet crap one has 3-4 places to put a C-clip, and the taper is much thinner.

it's not stock, or if it was once, someone modified it, but I can't imagine what for. :| (I don't know much though, so don't think this means anything)

yes, you can just bend the tab to re-set the floats. if you're good you can do it on the bike. i'm not. :(

are you certain your needle jets (this is the part that the float actuates) has a nice sharp point of rubber ? if it isn't, it will flow allot of fuel instead of sealing off proper.

Emulsion tube - yes it ony fits 1 way, be carefil, stuffing it in wrong = disaster ... but ironically, most people dont bust them, so I have 1-2 - more like 40 ... so its yours if needed, let me know and pay shipping.

Page 3.11 of the Haynes manual shows a pic something like this.  Does this look right for both carbs?  Yeah, I know the oring's missing.  Buddha's got some new one's on the way :thumb:

So next step is to take them COMPLETELY ;) apart and leave them overnight in some of this

ohgood, the pic was of the part above. I checked the jet needle and it looks stock.  Only one place for a clip.  Also the rubber tips on the needle jet for the floats are pointy and look good.

Will post results once it's back together.

Thanks.
