Hey all,
I just picked up an 06 GS500F recently to get into riding, and I've loved the bike so far but I'm always looking to make things faster(I work in a street rod shop). I didn't see the stuff I am going to ask in the FAQs or anything, if I missed it I appologize. This bike seems to fit me pretty well so I intend to keep it around for a while, possibly pick up a Gixxer as well and switch back & forth between the 2. I have ZERO experience working on motorcycles but I'm always looking to expand my knowledge/abilities.

First I'll introduce myself:
I'm Tucker, from eastern Iowa(around Williamsburg) 20 years old, graduated from Iowa State University with a double major in Logistics and Operations Management, but I've always been an auto-freak. I have about 10 years of automotive experience between mechanic work and body shop, as well as the street rod/custom shop I currently work at.

Now for the questions....
1) If I put an exhaust, like a Yoshi slip on or Jardine full exhaust, do I need to rejet the carb?
-if so, how difficult is it to do the Mikunis on these bikes?

2) I have seen people with Vortex/Clubman/or other clip on bars..what all is involved with doing a set of clip-ons?
-like what size, how involved, etc..

3) Some good places to get accessories for these bikes?

Thanks for any and all help guys/gals, I really appreciate it  :)

Yes you need to rejet. Its even good to rejet stock.. If you do get a slip on or filter or both send your carbs to buddha he will hook you up for 45 bucks plus shipping. He is hooking me up right now with that. BTW Im Justin i live in newton iowa if you ever wanna ride sometime.

Wow! 20 Y/O w/ a double BS? You started college @ 15 ???

Anyway...

WELCOME!

Yes, if you put on an aftermarket exhaust you should rejet. If not you can cause serious damage.

How difficult yo do the Mikunis ??? If you mean "clean/jet the carbs" not hard at all.  :thumb: There are some good how to's on here to walk you right though

I graduated high school when I was 17, and took summer courses and about 17hrs/semester, I just graduated from ISU. By the way, to double major was only 4 extra classes since so many of them overlap each other.

I guess I should say, how hard is it to re-tune them after jetting? I've done a ton of Edelbrock and Holley, as well as Autolite 2150s on street rods, but am completely new to the carbs on bikes.

The carbs are very easy on the bike.  The majority of tuning is the rejet after that usually set the idle mixture screws to 2.5-3.5 turns out and check the float height (I think that it is 14.6mm but you can check that on the forum).  The only other tuning adjustment is to put a few #4 SS washers under the needle to raise it a bit and enrich the midrange.  Some good rejetting info can be found in the wiki as previously stated in the "upgrades" section and http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=35237.0.
Just make sure to look at the '01+ bikes since that is when the carbs changed.

Good luck :thumb:

Welcome.
Any exhaust or air filter upgrade requires a rejet. The bike will run lean and like crap without a rejet.

You need 37mm clip ons. Many people say the Woodcrafts are crap.Never used them so I don't know that first hand.
Not much about clip ons but many quality options that are cheaper than clip ons.

Assessories are limited for the GS.I build my bikes so most stuff come from other bikes.

i'm not too worried about costs of parts/accessories, i'm used to paying a lot from building street rods/custom cars.

What size of pipe do I need to order(inlet diameter, length, and what-not) from a place like Yoshimura, Jardine, M4, etc...?

Mid pipes are made at a local exhaust shop.Cost around $20 to $30.There is no mail order supplier for mid pipes, unless you buy something and mod it to fit.

we have an exhaust bend/flare machine at out shop, but i would like to know what the inlet diameter is cuz we don't carry anything smaller than 2 1/2", and I know that pipe is way smaller than that haha.

Maybe I'm just kinda missing what you are saying, but what size of pipe do most GS500F riders get to put on their bikes(if there are different sizes, I am not too experience with bikes). I'm talking just the canister/muffler, I've seen that you must 'adapt' pipes to fit.

The F models have a little bigger exhaust pipe than the E models.i'm not sure what there size is.I think it's close to 1.75 maybe 2.0 inches.I know the pipe is metric but standard sizes can be made to fit with a tubing expander.

probably the easiest thing to do would be to buy a bolt on (pretty much from anything) exhaust that you like the aesthetics of and rig up a flange.  If you have a bender and a welder it shouldn't be that hard.  Buddha made em for a while and they worked quite well, ask him what size pipe was used.  With Buddha's flange you just cut the stock exhaust right after the 2 sides joined, slide the flange over the end and bolted your can to the flange and your exhaust mount.

that's a flange from Buddha with a Wileyco carbon can that came as part of a dual exhaust set and was split with another member.

okay, another question guys and gals...

Can you change the sprocket(s), to put in on the back wheel easier on our bikes? I am just curious, I've read the only way to really get it up there is to 9k clutch it, but I don't want to do that.

Just curious, a buddy of mine that has been riding for a while is looking to get a GS500F cuz he enjoyed it on his test ride, and wanted to know if you could change the sprocket to wheelie easier.

Yes you can get other size sprockets. Not sure where.Never needed any other sizes.Be careful with wheelies and stoppies. The oil runs away from the pick up and runs the top end out of oil causing engine damage.
