I rode my friend's Duc 1098S.  Oh.  My.  God.

First thing I did was almost drop it pulling out of the gravel stopping area on the side of the road bc of the rear wheel sliding all over the place.  Got it onto the road and accelerated "slowly" up to 50.  The bike in front was going faster, so I rolled on throttle to catch up.  Good thing it's a solo tail or I would have been flung off.  Front end started to come up.  Rolled off throttle and I was doing 80.  Shifted to third.  Rolled on throttle again, front end came up again, rolled off, came down, was doing 120.

Surprisingly, the riding position was quite comfy.  The built in ass-warmer (aka, undertail exhaust) was a strange feeling, but pleasant in the nippy coastal breeze.  And the Ohlins suspension - ridiculous.  Now I know what a proper suspension is supposed to feel like.  Throw it into a turn and it feels SO comfortable.  I didn't push it, of course, but it wanted me to.  It begged to be pushed.  Just effortless.  On long sweeping roads (Hwy 1 near San Fran), it was incredible in a way the GS can never be.  160 HP.  100 lb-ft of torque.  That amazing dry clutch V-twin desmo rattle-clang-parts-falling-off sound starts sounding Ferrari good upon a twist of the wrist.

I'm hooked.  Fortunately, says the friend who owns it (and a Daytona 675, a 1957 Porsche Speedster, and a Caterham 7):    "Whenever you need an adrenaline rush, you can borrow it".  Expect updates and pics  :thumb:

A family friend of ours has a Caterham 7, it's an amazing machine. He drove with us one day when we went riding and I was truly blown away. He would let us get ahead quite a bit, then go blowing by like we were standing still. Amazing sound and so close to the ground, it was crazy riding in it.

His is similar to this one

Hehe, another one drawn to the dark side.

Yeah, even the baby Duc's just feel......so alive, in comparison to other bikes.  The HM is a really fun machine and has 50+hp less.  The first time you look down and realize you left 100mph long ago on what essentially amounts to a dirt bike on steroids is kinda funny.  I don't think I would buy one though unless it was dirt cheap, for the price you might as well kick in the extra couple of $$ for a 1098.  There's a yellow 996 here that started life as a 748 that I might be buying a little later on.  I've ridden with him a few times and the thing is sick.  I've seen him pop it up at 140+.

Bucks: the 1098 does not come with a stock slipper clutch.

yamahonkawazuki

and whats been said with teh ducs being not tolerant to harsh throttle rollons/offs is true, which is why i refuse to take that free ride on the 1098. until i feel as thopugh im ready. ive ridden gix 1k's totally different beast by far

Awww come on Yama, you don't like the sensation of being thrown over the bike because you let the throttle go???   Or better yet the squeal of your rear tire spinning up on a downshift because you didn't get your throttle position just right??  That sound really does go great with the clack of the desmo valve train.

yamahonkawazuki

oh i do, lol BUT if im going to do that, id prefer it on my own machine. NOT someone elses. i love the desmo valvetrain noise, nothing like it. BUT i wont ride a 1098 until im ready for it

ah, ok. They said it was an stm slipper, I should have know that was after market. Watching all these Duc vids is making me want another bike, bad.

I could buy something with my new job after the summer is over, but I have to put all that money towards school.

I've got a few grand in financial aid, all the money I'm making this summer will be going towards rent actually. My parents are covering the school bills. Maybe I'll get a new bike in a year or so, I've only had my gs for 2 years.

This is the closest I'll be getting to a Duc in the next few years... http://columbus.craigslist.org/mcy/705915267.html

Heard one of those last Sunday. All I could think about was watching the road very closely for whatever the hell was about to fall off of it ;)
