O.K Fabricators and Engineers  need some help, advice and opinions.

Going with the Minimalistic Theme of my GS build I want to have a set of Passenger Pegs that can disappear when not in use.

1.) I don't want the Peg and or Peg mount welded to any part of the frame, has to have a bolt on provision.

2.) I would like to fasten the Peg and Peg Mount in a similar fashion to a kickstand. By doing such I could fold up the Peg Mount Up and towards the Back so it tucks up in this space when not in use.



3.) Hollow Round tubing is material of choice for mount. Appropriate length (3-6"?) to place pegs in ideal spot for 5' 8" passenger.

At top of this Vertical length of round tubing I'd cut out a half moon cup to weld a 3/4" section of the same hollow tubing in a horizontal position forming a T. A bolt would go through this vertical section of tubing, bolting the mount to the inside of the frame rail however it would need to be bolted in a fashion, perhaps with a bushing so that it can freely swing on the bolts shoulder. A spring, similar to a kickstand set up would need to be attached somehow? So that it hold it in the up position, hidden out of sight when not in use yet provides tension and can "Lock Out" when extended downward for use? Where does the spring need to be located, Frame rail and Peg Tubing?

4.) I plan on using the U shaped piece from the stock GS passenger peg mount to clamp the after market peg in, same peg as mentioned in the Wiki Write Up.



5.) I cannot figure a way to mount the peg at the end of the vertical section of round tubing that would allow it to rotate 180 degrees in such a manner that when the leg is folded down from the top sub frame rail the peg is in the appropriate position to put feet on yet when the vertical section is folded up behind the top subframe rail out sight the peg could fold inward 180 degrees to the space created between the upper rails near the seat mounts visible in this pic.



This is whats tripping me up, please I need ideas. Basically I need ideas on making invisible passenger pegs. Will what I described work, any ideas on my problem areas?

i would say you put like a quick release on them. say like the end of a air hose from like air power tools , sturdy but yet you can remove them and throw them under the seat and only have a lil nip in place of them.  pop on and offf solve the problem

Sleeve a larger section of tubing with the peg mounted on it over the round tubing. Put a key on (or pin though) the inner round tubing, and cut two slots on the outer round tubing to register on the key/pin (inward and outward peg position). Put a round spring over the inner tube above the peg mount and give it a pin or shoulder so it has some compression on the peg mount tube to keep it on the key. Pull peg mount up to disengage key, rotate to other position, key+spring locks it in place.

Low-tech version - just drill a hole through both parts and use a hitch pin (which you'll have to remove each time you want to rotate it, then replace - more of a pain to use, easier to make.)

Sorry no time to make a drawing if that's not sufficient. Work is insane.

I know you like the idea of it flipping back like a sidestand, but are you opposed to just putting threaded rivets in the subframe and bolting the pegs on? If you know you're not gonna be using them you could just pull them off and have a clean subframe. You could pick up a pair off of ebay for a couple dollars I'm sure, get some rivnuts about 8mm or so, and you could get it all sorted in about 2 hours.

As far as minimilistic goes, this is definitely the least amount of hardware to achieve what you want.

My concern, and reason for recommending bolt on instead of retractable pegs, is that there's no where to hide them on the GS. No matter what you do you're still going to have sideways footpegs resting against the undertail and I think they might look worse than if they were just down in the stock position. The other nice thing about having the threaded rivets in your frame, is that you could make some little bungee hook loops to bolt on if you were taking a trip and needed somewhere good to bolt a tail bag to. Just a simple little metal loop and you'd be set.
