Carbon fouled left plug-deciding to rejet carbs.

So after replacing the spark plugs for a 2nd time and opening up the carbs for the upteenth time I've decided to go ahead and upgrade purchasing a stage 1 jet kit.

The left carburetor has a clogged pilot jet and I am unable to get it out because of the head where the flat blade screwdriver has worn off from the previous owner.

Since I'm going to have to have extract it and replace it I've decided on purchasing a stage 1 jet kit.
The left spark plug is continuously appearing carbon fouled. And the only thing I can think of is the stuck pilot jet on the left carb.

I'm running out of ideas so I'm looking to see if this will work.
It's shut off on me twice now while on my way home.

Your pilot jet is F%^ked and you want to buy a jet kit ... why ... is that because you think a jet kit includes a pilot jet ... OK it does not. Atleast a DJ does not, and DK speaks greek when everyone else speaks english and they speak german when you learn greek. Forget getting it to run right, its right up there with "government intelligence".
I sell a pack with pilots in it, however I think you send me your carbs and $50+return shipping, I'll yank the busted pilots and all other jets, swap it all, adjust and set it also it will run right and mail it back.
The standard $45 + 1 drill is what I am calling $50.
I also have a jet pack for $22 with pilots, mains washers and bolts.
I am extremely experienced at drilling crap out of the damn GS carbs, you never know what our fellow riders put in the carbs ... each one can be the star of its own horror novel. Like one recent carb had everything sanded to 1/2 the original thickness.

OP let the buddha do it. alot cheaper, pretty much cheaper than the jet kit, if memory serves me. plus hell get teh fubared pilot out. btw buddha, i need to get with you regarding jets for mine. ill shoot you a pm

OMG.
Oops you're right!

I took a look at the DJ kit for the assembly and noticed that the Jet Kit did not include the Pilot Jets.
I thought it would be a modest upgrade to what needed to replace.

I guess I was just frustrated at how my bike is not being ridden.

I'm going to try to remove the Pilot Jet myself and replace it myself.
I've had my fare share of extracting tons of strange screws and bolts from my GS. (Most recently the exhaust bolts  :2guns:)
If that doesn't work. I'll take you up on your offer and have it shipped to you.

DJ kits are crap.Just a name.I have an unopened kit that includes stage 1 and 3.$80 for that kit.I spent $25 rejetting my carbs.



40/142.5/1 washer/2.5 turns on the mix screws.I have a K&N lunch box air filter and a D&D exhaust.



BTW if anyone can't live without a Dyno Jet Kit,I have one for sale.Includes stage 1 & 3.Message me.

Ben - that's not even the funniest thing I have heard about DJ kits.
I have 2-3 that people sent me asking me to fix it after they put in. I told them, I can rejet with my formula for $40-45, and they can have the DJ back, and everytime it worked really well. They never asked for the DJ back. I have 2-3 sitting round, some with various stuff missing, but most of the important bits still there.
Anyway canadian bikes come jetted with 40/125 through 2000 I think.
Substudio - Yes have at it, and I sell jet pack too once you get the pilot out, and mine has 40 pilots in it  :icon_mrgreen:.
You break the pilot fitting, then you better send it to me, I'll swap out the carb body  :laugh: ... or buy a good carb set from here.

Okay I ordered some Stock Pilot Jets for both carbs.
They should arrive tomorrow.

I'm gonna but some new plugs.
Buy some seafoam.

As for as the Pilots.
Is there a way to adjust the setting?

I installed my new pilot jets on both carbs.
And I measured the height of the float bowls and noticed the left carb that was carbon fouling was higher than the right one.
The higher float bowl was higher, so I assume that was the culprit of it running rich.

But along the way when putting the carburetor back together I noticed that my carburetor didn't look like the one on the diagram...

It turns out that the needle jet was missing.  :dunno_white: :o
The previous owner never put the needle jet back into the carburetors.
Could this cause any long term damage?

Now along with with bad wiring for the lights. Missing Fork spacers, I've now discovered that there were no needle jets in the carbs.

No needles and the bike was just fouling 1 plug ... OK that is good to know.
I'd sell you a set of needles, but I have 1 set of needles between 4 carbs and 3 bikes ...
OK fine, I'll find you some needles if you want ... How is $15 for a set, and I'll send you the 1 I have and make do with the Factory ones I yanked out of the carbs some guys sent me ...
On an unrelated note ...
Stock pilots jets are total crap. 40's are an absolute must ... once you get the needles ... you'd know.
Stock mains are also crap.
The only reason they sorta work especially when bikes been run a few years is cos floats go high as they wear and that richens them just enough to be able to run without signs of being lean.

Synch - prolly not. However I synch by eyeball. Equal gaps under the slides ... feeler guage or drill bit or light ... You might as well swap the pilots for 40's and mains for 125 when you are in there. And I sell them, $22 for the whole kit. Stock pilots leave you with hovering idles etc etc ... In fact the whole rev range is jetted 1 size too lean.
