Throttle Whacking

If I crack it wide open, it doesn't really take off unless I ease off slightly, then WHOA NELLIE, I've got to lean into it.  What is a common cause of this type of throttle response?  The bike is responding much better after the third carb takedown and cleaning, but I would like to get it a little more predictable/smooth.   It's a good thing I didn't jump on some supersport to learn on, or I'd already have been in a ditch somewhere.

I have experienced this too.
Got to wide open throttle seems sluggish.   Right about the time you back off to half throttle you expect deceleration, but you get a kick in the arse.

I have 40 pilots, 125 mains and one thin washer under the needle.

I think the needle might be causing a rich condition at low rpm.

Dead give away ... slide comming up too fast. can block 1 hole in it, or learn to open at the speed at which it likes it.
Maybe I can develop a plastic push fit thing that goes in there without drilling, threading or BS and you put it in there. When you think its not needed, just push it out with a pin. Maybe I should do that and supply with my kit.
Cool.

So does slide opening too fast cause a fat or lean condition?

The other thing I'd like to see on the carb is a dashpot.  closing the throttle seems abrupt.  But hey its a bike....

Slide comming up too fast causes a short term (very very short term) lean condition. However you try to jet yourself out of it and you'd end up screwing up somewhere else. It needs to be slowed down, but you can train yourself by practising slower opening.

I think this is one of the main reasons people that learn to drive/ride on manually changed gearboxes drive more smoothly. The gs (like any carburated machine) forces the operator to think during operation. Think about throttle opening, rpm range, available power left, etc.

Fuel injected cars/bikes seem to get whacked allot more than non-EFI machines.

Seems like the guys lucky enough to have EFI machines tend to be chasing the wrong problem, while the carb'd guys/gals seem to know where/when there will be a flat spot, how to compensate, clutch, etc.

just wanted to make some noise on another thread :D

Just got in from my daily 5 mile training run and smooth throttle operation seems to help/cure the problem!  On the other hand I  am having a freaking blast with this bike.   All my work stress slides right off in about two turns.    Thanks again everybody at GStwin.com
