So, the master cylinder on my '78 GS400 broke a couple weeks ago, and I asked my friend if I could borrow the master cylinder off his perpetually non-running GS500. He said I could just buy it from him and have whatever parts I wanted. So... I thought about it, and ended up buying it from him for fairly cheap. It hasn't ran in a while due to gummed up carbs and strange flaky orange gas in the tank. It was also dropped at fairly low speeds, which bent the handlebars and dented the tank a little.

So, I cleaned the rust out of the tank, made the drain tube stop leaking, sealed it, and will take apart and clean the carbs either tomorrow or the next day. Here are my two Suzuki GS's next to each other. It's kind of cool owning basically the same bike, only different by 23 years

So, I figure there'll be a few updates here in a couple days.

quick question (my other thread didn't garner much response) in 01 carbs, how many turns out should the idle mixture screws be at for a starting point? They were about 1/4 turn when I just took them out, but that seems WAY off

Thanks!!

Nice bikes. The carb mix screws should be around 2.5 turns out. That is usually where I start on all bikes.
PICS are GONE never TO return.

ooh, one more question: for the fuel valve on the tank, does the part a screwdriver goes in point towards the left or right?

Both sides are OFF (horizontal) and vertical is the ON position

Do you mean which way is the petcock oriented when attached to the tank? If so, you should have it facing the right side of the bike if you're looking from behind the bike. That way you can access it with a screwdriver more easily.

If that's not what you meant, sorry.
