Scratched Visor

The visor on my helmet has collected a number of scratches which are beginning to irritate me and impede my view. I looked into replacing it, but this would cost £25 ($50), which I think is a bit steep. Are there any tricks for reducing the visibility of scratches? My helmet is the Caberg Trip.

Xerapol might work if the scratching is very light. I have used it on plastic/perspex screens before and had good results.

Depends on how deep.  I know there are some plexiglass "repair" compounds out there that you wipe on.  Plexus cleaner will remove and/or fill minute scratches.

I usually take out deep scratches in my safety glasses with 2000 grit sandpaper followed by rubbing compound, followed by buffing with white rouge and an open cotton wheel on a power buffer.

If you're careful, you'll preserve the optical clarity.  Check with a piece of 10x10 grid paper before wearing your potential "beer goggles".

On a related note, does anyone know if the "anti-scratch" visors on the market actually any more scratch resistant?

i second the plexus. get all 3 stages & it will look like new. 3 is for heavy scratches, 2 id for medium to light & 1 if for very light & general cleaning.

My Shoei shield claims to be scratch resistant.  I don't have any scratches, even though I usually grind away at hard bugs with my fingernail when I can't get 'em off.  It seems harder to scratch than normal Lexan or Plexi, but YMMV.

You need to see your eye doctor. No, I'm not kidding.

Your brain should make up for the scratch because you're moving your head and vibrating, gyrating, etc all the time on the bike. If those scratches don't "disappear" by your brain filling in the bits, something may be wrong.

I have a heavy stigmatism along with only about 1/2 my field of view in my left eye. Eye surgery helped, but still only 60% of my FOV is worth while. My ophthalmologists explained that if I ever noticed the pattern of distortion change, or become a nuisance, it's a since of trouble, and get checked immediately.

Your eyes are windows to your soul.

The scratches I do have are in exactly the place you look when facing the road ahead. They're not so serious as to be dangerous, just annoying, like when you haven't cleaned your visor in a while.
