WELDER BAILED SO THIS NEVER CAME TO FRUITION.

If you're still interested, post here or PM me.  :thumb:

Okay, this is officially happening!  :thumb:

But we need more people to buy in for the best deal. If you've been wanting to add a luggage rack or top case, now is the time! I have an order for two right now, which will run me and fred* about $120 each. He's giving us a sliding scale discount:

3 racks = $110 each
4 racks = $100 each
5 (or more) racks = $90 each!  (Plus actual shipping/packing costs)

PM or post if you have any questions. The order goes in on Monday, 23 June so you'll need to join in by then. I'm hoping they can be done and in the mail by Monday, 30 June.

Okay, here are pics of just the rack.  :icon_mrgreen:

In each photo, you'll also see the changes I'd like to make:

1. Clean up the welds (yellow circles) - by the time my welder and I were done with this, we were done with this. It took a lot of patience on his part (with all the fitting and angles) so I wasn't about to ask him to grind everything down to a purdy finish. However, he said that if he did it again, he would. Plus, the EMT had a coating that caused a lot of sputtering when it was being welded; that wouldn't happen with regular steel so it'd be easier to clean up.

2. Use a single piece of steel (green arrows) - instead of welding together four 90s (EMT), we're just going to use a single piece of steel. So those welds would be gone.

3. Instead of using the pre-fab EMT 90 for the down tube, we'll bend a piece so that it's less curvy and more angular. (à la the Krauser rack.)

4. Again, since we're bending the pipe this time, we'll be able to follow the shape of the Monolock mounting plate more closely. While I know not everyone will be using a rack with a Monolock, it is probably the most commonly used. And if you use a different brand of top case, the tubular nature of the rack will still allow mounting. This is purely an aesthetic modification so things look more sleek when the top case isn't on (but the mounting plate is).

Another thing to consider is that the buyer will get to rattle can whatever color they want. It'll be sent out unfinished. Powder coating would probably make things too expensive. A can of black paint is < $5.  :thumb:

Let me know if there's interest.

(I should probably just leave well enough alone but if folks wanna do this, I'll facilitate! I know not everyone is inclined to DIY or knows a welder.   )

-------- Original Post --------

So, I have this rack (man, that could be the start of something really bad  ):

http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=41876.0

Just wanted to see if there are any riders out there who need a rack but don't want to make it themselves. My welder will do a discount for a "group" order (like 5).

There are a few changes I would make to the rack, but they'd be all aesthetic - make it look more seamless. Functionally, it's SOLID.  :thumb:

All the "selling" points are in the write-up, but I'm not looking to make money. It'd be what he charges + actual shipping + a box if I can't find one that fits. What I would get - in addition to helping my fellow GS riders, of course  - is an excuse and opportunity to tweak the design. :icon_mrgreen:

Can't give you an actual total without talking to the welder but, ballpark, I'd say $100, shipped.

Got some inquiries so this is just to see the level of interest.

Thanks for the initiative to offer this to the GS community!

Can you please clarify: for $100 shipped (approx.) you are selling the rack and the top box?

ebrunelle

I'd be in especially if that price includes the top box

Sorry for the confusion!

In my estimate of $100, shipped, I am only talking about a custom-made rack.

(For anyone who might be interested in info on that particular box - it's a Givi E350N and can be found for about $130, shipped)

Aww man...that means I have to take mine apart! ;) Maybe when she gets her next bath. :icon_mrgreen:

What'd I'd really like is to just have him weld a new rack with my design changes and be able to show pics of that. But I just can't justify having another rack made. :nono: And, trust me, I've tried really, really hard to make that argument.

Okay, then pics of JUST the rack coming soon.  :thumb:

Um, it's unofficial since I haven't ridden this way, but it'll hold my weight (about a buck thirty). I think it'd tip over backwards before it actually gave. That said, I wouldn't haul 100lbs of lead it every day over bumpy roads. I do think that it'll hold as much as you would want to have in there for a commute or roadtrip. :thumb:

Luski - who made the rack that inspired mine - said his would hold his weight balanced and he weights two bucks!

(edited to add the stuff in orange)

Damn I missed the deadline!  If anyone backs out or if another order gets started let me know!

BTW great write up and pics on the other thread, I'm  a visual learner too and it helps a lot to have something to refer to.  Thanks for your hard work on it!
