Fuel Starvation?

Yesterday the bike stalled a couple times on the freeway at 80mph in 6th gear.  I'm thinking that not enough fuel was getting into the carburetors, because when I pulled over to the shoulder, I checked the fuel level in the fuel filter and there was hardly any gas there.  After a few minutes, more gas would enter the filter and I could start the bike again and ride another 15 mins or so until it died again.

Ideas?

I have a pingel fuel valve connected to the stock frame mounted petcock, running just one line from tank into reserve.

also, anychance a magnetic tank bag could mess with the valve on the thingy in the tank to cause it to not breath well enough

hmmm....gunna take it for a ride sans magnetic tank bag tonight

Adam,

My frame fuel switch wouldn't flow enough fuel for sustained high speed operation.

Are you using the frame fuel switch because the Pingel is hard to reach? Just get rid of the frame switch entirely, since you have already done away with the reserve function. Maybe add a downward extention to the Pingel to make it more accessible.

The Pingel will flow lots of fuel for a GS. And if you forget to turn off the Pingel now and again, nothing will happen. I turn my race bike on in the Spring, and off in the fall, except for when I pull the tank. It's a good check of your float valves! If they leak, replace them.

Kevin, what did you use to plug the vacuum line when you got rid of the frame mounted petcock?

Uh, I think I just cut it short and shoved a bolt in it with gasket goop on it. It isn't much vacuum, so it's not hard to seal.

The magnetic tank bag will not have any affect on a vacuum operated fuel switch made from aluminum and plastic. Or maybe it's the 100 mpg carb secret?
