Ive searched and prodded looking for answers to these questions so without further ado:

1. Are LED's a direct drop-in with no mods?
2. Who has bought multi directional LED's that fit and operate with no problems and what brand are they?

Again, I know this has been covered and I'm sorry to clog up the forum with redundancy, but I did search and still havent found my answers. Thanks for the help once again everyone.

I know of no direct replacement LEDS.I believe you are speaking of the signals.Starwalt has a better understanding of the circuitry than I do.He may have a diagram to help you understand them better.

I bought two of the WLED-5x from superbrightleds (I think) to replace burnt out bulbs in both the tac and speedometer for my 2001. They fit fine. I couldn't get them to "feel" like they were firmly seated/snapped in place, but they actually fit fairly tightly. And both still work perfectly after 6+ months.

tripleb

I also bought some of those LEDs the superbright site and it worked perfectly.  The turn signal wont work for both directions though.  I think it has something to do with the polarity of the current.

Do you have a website I could go to?  How did you have to wire them?

They are direct replacement.  Remove old, pop in new.

Awesome! would I get them from the 12 volt car section?

Yeah, go to http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/store/commerce.cgi?product=CAR&next=50 (which is the second page of the car LED buyihg section) to actually buy them. They're car 12 volt WLED-x5 LED Wide Angle LED Bulb. At least, that's what I work and they're fine. Just have to pick the color I ended up getting Amber (for tach) and Warm White (for speed) so they're be different, but whatever look you like would be fine.

http://superbrightleds.com/specs/bulb_specs.htm is the page with some specs about it. And they're also listed on http://superbrightleds.com/mini-wedge.html

Good luck! By the way, I'm pretty sure I did something like http://pantablo500.tripod.com/id35.html to open up the gauges, which is a lot simpler than what the Clymer manual says and works fine for getting at just the bulbs. (But whatever works for you.)

Thanks alot! I'm not sure if I want to use different colors or not. I'd like to use blue for both. I was thinking on painting the bike royal purple and I think blue would accent it well.

If you ride at night, you might want to choose something (red/amber) from the other end of the spectrum for preserving night vision. The stock "white" is rather yellowish in practice. I find the typical blue high beam indicator annoying, but leave it blue as it's sort of supposed to be a small annoyance to remind you of the large annoyance that the high beam is to oncoming traffic. While blue gauge lights might look nice on a purple bike at a show, I'd kick it off my dashboard in a second for actually riding at night... DWYL.

After giving it more thought I think orange in the gauges would look pretty cool with a purple bike. Im all about some early 90's crazy color scheme bikes. Purple with lime green wheels and things like that.

Wish I would have seen this last week.  I just bought new gauge bulbs and replaced.  LED's would have been a much better choice.  However, it is good to know that there is a direct replacement.
