umm so i just changed my oil and at the urging of my roommate who generally knows what hes talking about and he has a vtr1000 superhawk which he changes his oil with 5w-40 and we chnaged it togeather and he said that i should use it in the mts bc it would be better in the cold but anyway it is not running noticeably warmer however since the change i have logged about 120 miles today and everything else seems to be fine so basiclly im wondering if i have to and get some 10w 40 now, if i screwed myself, or if im fine.... hopefully

Its fine. Check the owners manual (if you have one) You can use 5 40  :thumb:

5W40?  You in Alaska or something?   :dunno_white:
Every zero you add to the tolerance adds a zero to the price.

If the product "fails" will the product liability insurance pay for the "failure" until it turns 18?

If I'm not mistaken, the main problem you'd have with 5W, possibly, is a bit of extra leakage/burn off right when the engine is sitting or at start up. So check the level more often. Once it gets up to temp, it should be almost the same as 10W-40. (It might not last quite as long before the oil starts to age, but no big deal.)

so does any1 know why its running so hot i mean i went to check my oill level and when i grabed the dip stick to unscrew it it burnt my hand ... reading around else where in the forums is that because its running lean and i need to rejet my carbs and is so why was it not running so hot before grant it i never checked my oil that quick after a ride before but i did not really notice the heal on the tank before or on the seat but it is a black seat so it may have been the sun but i just want to make sure im being paranoid and i didnt mess something up bad

Thanks

It's hot because it's an aircooled engine, and if you're north of the equator, it's summer.  I have to use a rag to insulate my sensitive fingers when checking the oil with the engine hot.  Usually, I check it before a ride.  On long rides, I must check it hot, and the dipstick is too hot to touch without gloves or a rag.

So, no panic, it's normal. :thumb:

MM, most humans start to feel pain around 140F.  All humans feel pain and flesh damage starts to occur above 150 F.

The case temperature on the GS runs around 200F and the cylinder head temp around 300F or more.  It is perfectly normal.

Ok, all normal, genetically undamaged humans feel pain over 150F.  How's that?   ;)
