Hi,

I am looking after a friends UK GS500F 2005 model which has done about 3000 miles now but seems to be a little down on power.

I don't know these machines too well but after reading the forum it seems that many re-jet, presumably to smooth out and restore a bit of power lost through emissions compliance.

My question is what are the best improvements that can be done for a low budget ( air filter / re-jet ?) and what differences should that make to the rideability / power output ?

Thanks,

Nick

UK bikes already have good jetting. No need unless the air filter and/or the exhaust is being changed/upgraded.

Ben - 05 may be too new, they may have just got the crap that we did ...

Possible. The only way to know is to pull the jets and needles and compare to a US bike.

Look in the suzuki manual that covers 05. They spec carbs etc ... That was how I learnt about the various years and countries for the pre 00 bike.

This (UK) one is definitely carbed - do some have Fuel Injection then ?

NO GS IS FUEL INJECTED!

UK spec bikes and Canadian bikes come with different needles and jets. Most of us in the US rejet to close to UK standards just to get our all stock bikes to run correctly.

OK - thanks guys - looks like the UK spec jetting  is about as good as I am going to get without spending money for serious mods like cans etc

Because of the Uk Jettting ..... Nexxus And Predator , Both say theyre in no need for a rejet with the Exhaust , i happen to no someone who made a exhaust from a Old Car Exhaust for his GS , and ran it for miles  and it wasnt lean ,

The K and N Lunchbox is a different matter, it will be lean as fatless bacon , it has to be rejetted for that

Hi,

Is it one of the "Learner specials" that are restricted to 33hp?

Jay_wolf

i was gonna say , My Gs is Fast , I mean to more or less any car , it will blow it away , i wouldnt call it a underpowered bike

Hi Sledge,

I am not sure if it is a restricted one - I think the sales guy would (should !) have said at time of sale if it was. Its difficult to guess whether it behaves as a 33 bhp or a "full-fat" 50 bhp as my bike is the FJR with PC3, so quite a bit different.

How can I check if its restricted ?

Thanks,

Nick

an '05 w/ 3000 miles....has it been setting up long?  Perhaps the jets/carbs need a good cleaning to restore a little snap, could be dragging a brake, wore out/slack chain, sorry gas, etc.
Attack but have a back up plan

nickhlx

Thanks for the suggestions - I have given it two good services in last 1000 miles, fuel is fresh, brakes not dragging, chain fine and lubed but it could have been sitting for a long period. seems to run and idle perfectly, and will get up to around 75 mph quite well but seems to struggle past that speed. might eventually getup to 85 or even 90, which doesn't seem enough for 50 bhp...  hence the query whether this is a restricted model....

Thanks,

Nick
