So lately I've noticed that the GS doesn't like when the misses jumps aboard and seeing as though gas is $4 plus a gallon I try my "damndest"(sp) to convince her to ride. It seems that after 15-20 minute ride of 75 plus the bike tends to sputter,kick,buck and eventually die leaving us on the side of the rode for about 5 minutes then she's ready to go. Now, I know that alot of you will chime in with "PETCOCK,PETCOCK"  :laugh: but that excuse was eliminated a week ago and I'm still having the same problem. Any thoughts? Sri,Ken..let's hear it.

i dunno, but my old '78 GS400 hauled my girlfriend and I at 75 mph for over an hour without a hiccup... And that has half the horsepower!

Try popping the gas cap when it dies. If that eliminates the 5 minute wait, you've found the problem - tank vent needs cleaned. Either the Wiki or Kerry's site has detailed instructions with pictures.

Why only when two up? Probably not totally clogged, and sucking gas a bit faster with the larger load.

Anyway, that's my guess.

Hey there average,
It certainly sounds like a vacuum petcock issue, so tell us what you did last week to "fix" your petcock. Perhaps you didn't "fix" it.
Tell us what you did? Did you replace it with another one? Did you modify it to no longer be a vacuum petcock?
Did you install a fuel filter? That could cause slower fuel flow and your problem.
Let us know and we can go from there.

It took me a LONG time to find my fuel starvation problem. I changed petcocks (in tank and out) cleaned my carbs about 10 times, added new fuel lines and more!

Turned out there was a pin hole in the one carb diaphragm. Once I replaced that... I NEVER have a problem. And as far as 2 up goes, I ride w/ my wife on the back all the time, she only weighs 100lbs  :icon_mrgreen: so its kinda like wearing a backpack.. but none the less, you should have no trouble with a passenger.

Average, try draining your float bowls into a clean coffee can and checking for rust.

Mine had a tank rust problem when I bought it.  I could go anywhere from 50 miles to 300 miles before it would suddenly start running on one cylinder, then die.  5 minutes rest for the dirt to work it's way out of the jet and I was good to go for another 10-75 miles.

A Red Kote treatment of the tank solved that.  Haven't had a single hiccup in 2 years.   :)

Right and wrong.It could be the vent inside the fuel cap for the tank.I did the write up on cleaning it and it's in the FAQ. http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=41061.0


It could still be the petcock.They sit on shelves for a long time and the little one way valve turns to crap.Here's a pic.

This is what causes most petcock to go bad when the diaphram is good.

My baby is dark skinned. That's all. And Trw; I got a petcock locally that was in pretty much the same condition as mine but I'm going to see what ben's does for me. We can eliminate the petcock if I'm still having the same issue.

This was somehitng we did a carb swap of sorts a few years ago didn't we ... pinhole in diaphragm will make it run to a 5-6K or even higher if really small hole under load.
Essentially it will run 8K+ in 1st, 7500 in 2nd, 7K in 3rd, 6K in 4th, 5K in 5th and 4K in 6th max rpm with a hole in the diaphragm you will barely see if you put it to the sun. That dropping max Rpm under increasing load = dead giveaway its a diaphragm.
It usually wont cause a true starvation, though you may interpret it as no fuel getting to the thing ...
