the other day I tried starting the bike and it turned over fine but wouldn't idle for more than 1 or 2 seconds.  If I started it and gave it a little gas it would continue running, but wouldn't idle unless I kept giving it gas for 20-30 seconds.  I've searched the forum and I can't find anything that describes the problem exactly.

When I bought the bike this past weekend the PO said he has never used the choke because it doesn't work and that seems to be true.  Do you think the lack of a working choke is causing the problem?

Thats what it sounds like to me. I'd think that you giving it constant gas with the throttle would be the same as using the choke. Will it stay running after you let it warm up with the throttle for a few minutes?

I think it does.  Is there a way to fix the choke without buying a new left side assembly?

I would think you should check the choke cable attachment to the carbs and see whats not working.  The cable might have just popped out or broken.  Its not to hard to check that, just take your tank off and have a look.  There's loads of pics and instructions on how to do that on this page: http://www.angelfire.com/mt2/mikesgs500/rejetting/

That said, it could also be something wrong with the starter plunger/choke valve.  If so, it would be harder to tell and require more disassembly.

FYI, I'm not an expert and have only recently started working on my GS, but this is what I would do.

you were right justin.  I took apart the left side assembly and checked out the choke situation and the there was no choke cable.  So now I have to install a new one.

I'm starting to think the PO of my bike had no effing clue what they were doing...at least I know what the problem is now.
