Hey guys, I love adventures, and I'm planning on riding to IN from Kansas City MO next weekend. I hope to camp out mid way on the 455 mile trip somewhere on the way down then finish the ride on saturday. Then, stay around Indiana for a few days--then work my way home.
1) do you think packing a tire patch kit is a good idea?
2) I only have a tank bag (recon 19), a swiss army backpack, thinking about bundgie-ing a small back over the tail ---(a tent perhaps), is this enough room for gear?
3) I love roughing it, but do you have any mandatory steps or precedures that I should follow prior to leaving next friday? (service on bike) oil's done... stuff I should bring?

Prior to this trip, my longest trip was 300 miles from KC to springfield Mo then 300 miles home the next day. I'm very excited and I can't wait to let you know how it turns out.

PS. I just installed a zero gravity sport touring windscreen  ;)

Some folks prefer a patch and inflate option to limp somewhere. I suggest a towing plan that covers bikes, and not messing about with anything less than a properly installed vulcanized patch, which is not a road-side project.

Take a quart of oil with you...and check your tires.  Fill up gas every 120 or so miles to stretch and top off, just to be safe.  I strap a duffel back on the tail using tie-down straps that I can cinch tight, rather than bungees.  Take a bunch of water bottles with you to stay hydrated, or wear a camelbak while you ride.  I used to do that on dirtbike trips all the time.  Have fun!

If you want to meet up on the way back, I'll show you some sights in IL and a few good roads in MO.  I'm just south of I-70 in central IL.

There are some decent campgrounds at both Rend Lake, IL and Carlyle lake, IL.
Every zero you add to the tolerance adds a zero to the price.
