The only thing here that's REALLY getting to me is the bike problem. So I was leisurely riding around the neighborhood for about 30 minutes or so and my bike starts bucking like she's running out of gas. I can see gas in the tank, and it looks like enough to not have to switch to reserve. I wait. I try to start it for a few minutes and nothing. Then, after about another five minutes she starts and I ride her home. This has happened once before. I'm also 90% sure she's low on oil because I started having trouble shifting gears(kept going into nuetral from first).  Is this the infamous fuel petcock? It's an 89 if thats any help, and yes it is really my birthday. Thanks in advance for the help everyone.

happy birthday

Put more gas in and check the oil!  :icon_mrgreen: Why say you think its low? just check  :icon_mrgreen: Its easy enough. And you say you see gas but.. how much? top it off and see if the problem continues

Happy birthday ... you dont have 3 problems, you only have 1 problem.
You have a money problem, cos if you had $$, you can give to the woman, and she's disappear, and you take take some more of the $$ and buy another bike and forget this one too.
Anyway, your bike is low on oil and you're thinking while riding around the neighborhood ... OK lets see here, you definetly dont want to put oil in, that only masks the problem, maybe you need to rev it higher and it will clear it right up. Yea, more revs, and if that dont do, after 10 mins of redlining it, you put it in 6th gear and try and ride it at walking speed.
Cool.

Whenever I check the oil it seems fine(I followed the guidelines on here), but I went ahead and topped it off a minute ago while the engine was still hot and it shifts fine now. It almost looks like theres gas in the neck of the tank still but I dont think that's accurate. I will say that when I filled it up I didnt have this problem but that means I'd be getting BAD gas mileage because I only ride it around my neighborhood and never for more then 45 minutes or so.

OIl OK, gas is full, and I guess no gas in oil OK. Fuel starvation is usually at high speed sustained 3/4 throttle and up. OK so you may not be getting fuel flow at all ... or just enough to idle and no more.
OK so, connect a hose to both of the drain spigots on the carbs, put a gas can under it, put it in prime, and open the drain screws. Fuel should flow into your gas can till your tank gets to ~1/2 gal or less. If not, your fuel flow is poor.
The other theory involves poor venting, so I guess open the gas cap and run it, but it will also act up at high speed more than at low speed.
Maybe carb vents are bad - top T fitting in the rear carbs - needs to go to the air and not be clogged.
Past it, electrical, other crap, heat causing sheite to misfire etc etc ... more complicated.
Cool.

Run a hundred miles then fill'er up.It may look like there's enough gas,but GS's like more gas in the tank.Plus the vac petcock sucks.I switched to a gravity feed and no more problemo.... :icon_mrgreen:

the gs is gravity fed. the vaccuum petcock only opens and closes it.. you can have what appears to be 1/4 full BUT to the gs, it will be damn near empty ( and will act as such). and dammit pandy im the only one your sposed to beat on. and make me like it :icon_twisted: O0

How does it work so far? I'm going to order it for sure if you havent had any problems since. Thanks.

Roadstergal

If it runs fine on Prime but not on On, you have a vacuum problem.

+1
I had the same problem, check your hoses, both petcocks, and any rusty springs or swollen up diaphragms
Seemed like a good idea at the time
