I bought an '04 gs500f a few weeks ago and have been reading alot on this forum ever since i bought it to try to learn as much about the bike as possible.  I don't have my license yet and go to take the msf course in 2 weeks but have been riding around a little bit on my permit.  I have also been looking over the bike and checking to make sure that everything on the bike is in good condition since i bought the bike used.  So far i have cleaned and lubed the chain, tightened the chain, checked the oil, checked the battery acid levels, checked the brake fluid (front and rear), checked the brake pads (need to replace the rear pads cause they are low), and need to replace the rear tire.  Is their anything else that i should be checking to make sure everything is good, the bike runs fine now and i want to keep it running good so want to make sure i check all the maintenance things that should have been done since i don't know what the previous owner actually did to the bike.  I also plan on painting the fairings and rearset pieces once i stop riding for the winter but don't know what type of paint i should be using.  The tank is still in great shape so wasn't going to paint that just the plastic pieces.

Thanks for any and all help

Oil filter, air filter...
I think that and the ones you already did should cover the standard checks.
Also get yourself a service manual - pretty much everything is explained there.
And finally make sure to check this page out ;)
