I removed the fairings from my bike (thanks for posting that good picture) and took a closer look at my engine. It seems that the front of the engine makes a lovely shelf for road debris. Has anyone else encountered this problem?

I'm glad I looked. This is actually after I started to clean it off.

On E's its actally a smaller problem, cos we see it easy. Potentially wind will blow it off too. I usually see melted on crap there like tar etc etc.
Cool.

Its common to all GS500's but (as The Buddha quoth) is worse on the faired models.

Hey, have you removed dirt and found a fairing on a bike ... well, I did one time and found a carburetor ...  :thumb: This POS shadow I bought had a hornets nest in there behind the airbox and above the carbs.
Cool.

I guess it will stay easier as long as I leave the fairing off.

Every couple of months I make sure to clean my bike's engine and other components. I find that spraying a mix of 50% dishwashing detergent and 50% greased lightning or simple green generously around the engine and letting it soak then rinsing it off with a hose keeps everything nice and clean, wheel cleaner also works but I think is too harsh. It can even remove all the built up oil around the air filter cover.

They all do it, its more obvious because you have a silver engine and not the black one. Wait till you get a few miles on it and the cylinder base gasket and tacho drive start passing a slight amount of oil and it really will turn into a mess........ Another good grot spot is the crotch of the swingarm where all the sh** that gets flung off the wheel lands.
