Thinking of Selling???

I bought a '92 GS500E this spring to learn how to ride.  Ive invested a little bit of money to have the carbs cleaned and get it running better. Since that was done it runs great and has been ridden almost daily (spring/summer of '08). Im thinking of selling it to get a bigger sportbike which is my reson for learning on the GS. I have three questions...

1. Im very comfortable leaning, stopping, etc. on my GS; is it smart for after one season to move up to a 600?
2. What should i expect to get for a '92 GS500E (currently Purple but my friend can paint it for cheap if itll bring more money to the table) w/ under 11Kmi.?

PROS...
-Runs Great(Mechanically sound)
-Shiny Paint
-Good Tires
-Passed MD Inspection (w/ no problem spring '08)

CONS...
-Scrathes to break lever and footpeg, also headlight housing, dent/scratch(Previous owner laid it down    to avoid kids playing)

3. When would be the Best time to sell, Now, Over winter, or wait until spring and what price would you list/sell at?

+Thanks

wait until spring when people are looking to buy bikes to ride more.  then you can get the most out of it.

Speaking as someone who started on, and rode for many years, 650 inline fours, (and then got a GS) I'm not sure "move up" is really an appropriate statement, but if you just have to have the go-faster bikes, sure fine, knock yourself out.

Spring is the time to sell if you want more money. Now is the time to sell if you don't want to store it for the winter. Of course, fall is the time to buy that go-faster bike you want, so...you might want to try selling it now before it's fall, and if it moves at a price to suit you, you'd have money in hand to go hunting that go-faster bike when they should be cheaper. If it does not sell, try again in spring.

If it's the factory paint in good shape I would leave it alone. The scratches and scrapes sound fairly minor - even a (very) slight selling point to a new rider (look, it's already scraped up - no terror of the first scratch). Money spent on new paint is unlikely to pay back, even though some folks here don't like purple.

What did you pay? That's probably a good local approximation of what you might expect to get. You might sell it for $2000, or it might sit for along time as an older bike. You'd likely get it sold for $1500 no problem, and for $1000 it'll be gone in a week, unless your local market is silly.

I think beginners are ushered towards smaller and cheaper bikes because the controls are not yet second nature.  If everything is second nature at this point and you feel very comfortable on your bike, its probably safe for you to move to something thats more powerful.

As much as I like my GS, I'll gladly sell it in 6-8 months and replace it with something without rust problems, with better looks, and with more power.  Either an SV650 or Ninja 650R is in my future.

As DoD said, prices are lower in winter.  If you want to ride until you buy a new bike, sell and buy the more expensive bike in winter.

ok some things to think about
GS 60-70 to the gallon              new ninja zx6 around 30-40
insurance GS cheap                  new ninja exspensive cause its a new sport bike
police atention will also increase alot

im not say don't do it but def think about it.
also is it 4k bucks nicer?

yeah i bought a bike because ive always wanted to have fun, go fast and stand out. im a bit superficial but im kinda at that point in my life where i want to express myself to the fullest and though my GS is a a blast, i wanna play with other toys. i may be back who knows but i think im gonna let it go, pay down some bills and get the 600 and i really DONT want a ninja, i was thinking about buying my friends r6 or a gixxer-6. anyone in the DC metro area - Baltimore. im in Bowie come check it out, let your friends know!

I'm not sure if this is actually what you meant, but if you really want to "express yourself to the fullest" then you probably shouldn't be getting an R6 or especially a GSXR.  Everybody and their mothers have those.  Unless you are straight from a cookie cutter and that's what you want to express...

Sorry if this comes off as condescending, I really don't mean it to be.  I'm just putting that out there in case you haven't noticed it yet.  Either way, good luck with whatever you decide :thumb:

in expressing myself i meant that its what ive always wanted regardless of who has it and what their doing with it. theres simply more you can do with the bike mod/power wise and i just think that style bike is the ultimate aesthetically speaking(IMO). i am however going to hold on to my GS a while longer unless someone makes me an offer i cant refuse. a friend of mine took me on the most ridiculous road ever the other day. one lane hair pin turns up and down hills...its nuts. i want to master that road before i let it go

The Gs is such a Nimble bike , i dont no why u would want to get rid of it to be honest , i love mine , i have it in my bedroom ,

havent found a car yet who can do me off the lights ,  the MPG is awesome , and at 1.10 a litre it really does put me off a bigger bike ,

I like the r6's and that , but i love my gs and i havent really felt like ive needed a *upgrade* maybe a Big single 650cc , for the Town and greenlanes  :thumb:

Cool man, I can respect that (not like it matters what I think...)

By the way, that crazy road, was it off Central Ave (Rt 214) or Rt 2, or was it up near Baltimore?
