Hey guys, need a little help here. It might be obvious to most of you, but not to myself...What is this part, and do i need it to have my bike run? (my bike is in pieces right now)

Thats the voltage regulator I believe. I had a feeling that was the mystery part. It's also known as a rectifier if I'm not mistaken. I'm sure someone will set it straight though.
