I bought my gs500e used and with no owners manual or any other literiture. i know there are a couple of books on the market, what do sugest for someone who just wants to do basic repairs and maintenence?

Either of the Haynes or Clymer manuals will serve your purposes. Although I own both, I prefer the Clymer version.
