hehe, yeah, im on here 8 hours out of the day.  maybe..i dk how ong but it invovles alot of random logging in.  But i have nothgin better to do.  I am one of the fortunate few.  But i do agree with scottpA_GS.  You have to protect your company and make sure shaZam! is gettign done.  No on elikes a slacker or hacker at work.  Two things most companies dont want to give a paycheck to.

Well if you guys honestly believe that, then it doesnt matter what i say. All i can do is presume that you live in a country and a place where you live in more fear and under more control than we do here in BB britain.

The only people here who are monitoring their employees consistantly using their time on the internet are huge corporations where they start at the top and predict from the top how much output they will get from their employees at the bottom. If it doesn't meet said output then they are looking for the flaw.

There is the odd small company who has an MD thats a duck and abit of a computer whizz who cares to log his employees actions and monitor them.

However there are many many many more companies big and small here who TRUST their employees to work. And monitor them on a much more personal level and dont just fire someone then do what happened to weasel and just try and motivate them int the right direction.

I disagree...

In my leadership experience, my employees have worked better, harder, and more productive when they AREN'T being watched.  I have also read and studied many leadership books and gone to many leadership seminars none of which talk about micromanaging and 'keeping tabs' on employees.  I'm a hard working kind of guy who gets his shyte done but when i get the feeling I'm not being trusted you can kiss my good attitude goodbye... and its not intentional it just turns into a resentment that I'm not trusted.  If I find out I am being monitored, you can bet I'll have a talk with leadership and if they don't stop I look for a new job.  I'm not in the business of being watched.  I work.

I do agree there needs to be steps to provide security against pr0n and other such illegal 'activities' (DNS servers are great ways to take care of that).  However, the shear amount of adult themes and pages is so big that it is a waste of time to try and monitor it.  This is probably why his business only has 10 employees.  He's too busy looking 'in' at his employees and not looking 'out' at opportunities to help the bottom line.  Setup something that takes care of those illegal sites and then leave your employees alone.

Inspire your people TO work rather than make them afraid NOT TO work.

It's really easy to see what machines are going where...  With the right packet sniffer, you can do it in real-time, view the pages yourself, read any unencrypted text, and so on...  Even without it, he can look through router logs...  Or even look at each machine's history and cookies.....

But, why?

If you're getting ALL of your work done ON TIME, why does he care?  If he says anything about it directly, ask him if you're not meeting his expectations.  Ask him if he thinks you could be getting more done.

Just don't ever be the worst guy on the team.  If you ARE meeting expectations and getting work done, who cares...
